Police on Sunday confirmed the arrest of Vijay Pandit alias Vijay Singh Nahar, one of the main accused in the Rs 5.25-crore Defence Colony heist, who had dreamt of “a crime of his lifetime” that would allow him to settle down with his family to a quiet life outside Delhi.

The 37-year-old resident of Maidangarhi was arrested on Saturday from the Palwal bus-stand where he had gone to meet relatives.

A Maruti car was seized from him. This car was also used during reconnaissance trips when the robbers were trailing the cash van in the days before the heist.

Vijay told police that he got

Rs 90 lakh from the loot and he gave Rs 86 lakh to his relatives — Tekchand and Krishan Kumar — for safekeeping. The relatives were arrested and the money recovered two days after Vijay and four others looted the van transporting money from ICICI Bank’s Hauz Khas branch on September 30.

Altogether 10 people, including prime accused Hari Kishan and his wife Rashmi, have been arrested for the daylight robbery.

After catching Vijay on Saturday, police raided locations in Rewari and Gurgaon for an associate who has been allegedly given a pistol used in the crime and a portion of the loot. He is absconding.

Vijay told police that he had spent Rs 4 lakh from his share of Rs 90 lakh over the past week as he kept shifting from one hideout to another, including a couple of days in Haridwar.

Police said Vijay has been involved in about 27 cases of murder, kidnapping, robbery and theft. He has been convicted in three cases.

He contributed his bit to the plot that Hari Kishan hatched when they met in Tihar Jail. He was in the group of criminal Billoo Solanki, police said.

After his release two years ago,he married a girl from Jatola village in Palwal. A police officer said: “He dreamt of doing something big… the last big crime of his lifetime that will give him enough to settle down with his wife to a quiet life outside Delhi.”

Vijay said it took the gang a fortnight to perfect the plan — gather logistics and arrange for vehicles, weapons and safehouses.

Police said on the day of the robbery,he and Ranjit Rumal — who is directly involved in the crime and currently on the run — downed a few pegs at his house and left the Maruti car at Khoka Market in Saket. Then they joined Hari Kishan,Deepak and Yogendra Kumar in a stolen Hyundai Verna to reach the crime scene.

After collecting the booty from Kishan’s house in Khirki Extension,Vijay went to Maidangarhi, collected his wife and ailing daughter and fled to Mewat via Gurgaon. He spent the night before his arrest in Jahangirpur village in Noida.
