Ghaziabad police on Monday suspended five police personnel,all from Indirapuram police station,after a man accused in a double murder case was found dead in the lock-up on Sunday morning. Police said a case of murder has been registered against unknown persons and the matter was being investigated.
Speaking to mediapersons at a press conference,Nitin Tiwari,Senior Superintendent of Police (Ghaziabad) said: Five police officers have been suspended from the police station. They are Station House Officer Gorakh Nath Yadav,Sub-Inspector Rajbir Singh,Head Constable Totaram,and constables Chetan and Ramchandra.
Vineet Sharma,who had been arrested on Saturday,on the charge of murdering his sister Babli and her husband Suresh Sharma,was found hanging in the Indirapuram police station lock-up on Sunday. Suresh was a Central Industrial Security Force constable.
Vineet was to be produced in court on Sunday afternoon,and according to police,had killed the couple in their quarters in the CISF campus after robbing them of earrings,a gold chain and a motorcycle. One other accused,Narendra,had also been arrested.
A senior police officer said: Based on a complaint by Sharmas family,a case of murder has been registered. The post mortem report shows strangulation as the cause of death. It is a matter of investigation of whether he was suffocated to death or committed suicide. A case of murder against unidentified persons has been registered and further investigations are underway.
In the aftermath of the incident,relatives of Vineet and Narendra had alleged police brutality in the lock-up. These are matters are under investigation andcannot be commented on right now, a senior officer said.
Police claimed that Vineet pulled out strips from his blanket to make a rope,with which he hanged himself from the ventilator in the bathroom.
The co-accused in the case,Narendra,reportedly said Vineet was electrocuted.
Narendra was lodged in the same lock-up as Vineet.
Vineets body has been sent for post-mortem examination and an inquiry has been ordered by the district administration.
Police said a constable on duty alerted them after he found Vineet hanging in the bathroom.
He was then taken to the hospital,where he was declared dead on arrival, a senior police officer said.
