Police on Tuesday arrested five persons for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to gangs in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
Police said the group had supplied ammunition and guns to various gangs during the UP elections,and were to supply more arms for the upcoming MCD polls.
The group was headed by Deepak Kumar (24),a BBA graduate,and other members were Mohd Sadiq (22),Mukesh (25),Ravi Kumar (23) and Vipin (22).
Police received information about liquor and weapons to be illegally supplied in Delhi by the accused. Keeping in view the upcoming MCD elections,they carried out thorough checking. A close watch of bad elements and checking of suspicious vehicles to prevent illegal activities during the election period is being carried out,said Additional Commissioner of Police (West) V Renganathan.
Police received a tip-off that the group would be coming from Inderlok in a Scorpio on March 20 to supply weapons. The gang was to come from Inderlok and go towards Tilak Nagar to supply the weapons. The police were immediately alerted and we put up barricades under Zakhira flyover, Renganathan said.
The accused allegedly came in a white Scorpio,and were intercepted at the checkpost. There were five persons in the car,and they were arrested. It was found that they were carrying 21 country-made pistols and 25 live cartridges with them, Renganathan said.
Interrogation revealed that Kumar met some groups in Delhi and found that there was a huge demand for weapons,and so decided to become a supplier,police said. The group bought a country-made pistol for Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000,and sold it for Rs 5,000. Police are also conducting raids to apprehend the buyers of such weapons.
