The Congress is likely to announce its first list of candidates in the coming weeks. The party is planning to focus on the 24 seats where it finished first or second in the 2013 Assembly elections.
The decision was taken during the first meeting of its Delhi election committee. Party sources indicated that candidates who had won from their seats or had finished second were likely to get a ticket again.
Currently, the Congress has nine sitting MLAs. Eight MLAs — Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Arvinder Singh Lovely (Gandhi Nagar), Haroon Yusuf (Ballimaran), Mohd Asif (Okhla), Mateen Ahmed (Seelampur), Prahlad Singh Swahney (Chandni Chowk), Devender Yadav (Badli), Jai Kishan (Sultanpur Majra)and Hasan Ahmed (Mustafabad) had managed to hold on to their seats in the 2013 Assembly elections. The ninth MLA, Shoaib Iqbal from Matia Mahal, recently joined the party.
Sources said former Cabinet minister A K Walia and former Seemapuri MLA Veer Singh Dhingan will also be given a ticket.
The meeting was attended by almost all senior members of the party, including former chief minister Sheila Dikshit and former DPCC president J P Aggarwal.
AICC general secretary in-charge of Delhi P C Chacko said, “All members of the committee decided that the focus should be on announcing the list as early as possible. We will do that in two stages — first, we will announce the names of candidates in the 24 seats where the Congress had finished first or second. Second, we will announce the rest of the names.”
Chacko said the meeting also decided on the norms that will be followed by the screening committee while picking candidates.
The screening committee will take up the recommendations made by the DPCC during its meeting on December 18.
