If it was Size Zero and the bikini act in Tashan that kept Kareena Kapoor in the news despite the flop film, this time its her fifty-something shoes and bold graphic prints, created by the irreverent designer Aki Narula. Whether its Kapoors all black ensemble comprising a huge flower pinned on the shoulder or the canary yellow casual pleated dress with an ink blue clutch on the cobbled streets of Venice, her look is chic, sophisticated, with a hint of vintage. Narula hand-picked 50 dresses sourcing them from ateliers and studios in Milan, consciously mixing in vintage gems such as a grey striped corset paired with a pencil skirt.
The producer wanted an international look since the film is shot in Los Angeles, says Narula who began his research last July. He picked up the hottest trends, silhouettes and prints of 2009 and arrived at colour-blocking mismatching styles that add that graphic element to the clothes. So,you find Kapoor, who plays a supermodel in the film musing in a corner in a pink vest, white shorts (frayed for effect),green shoes and sporting an oversized purple tote,or in a black shimmering dress with red peep toe shoes. The mismatch style is the new cool. Colour quirkiness has the biggest influence on the fashion industry at the moment and gives that it girly look, says Narula.
The dresses are kept short, with lots of emphasis on bags and shoes (Kapoor reportedly used 55 pairs of shoes in the film). There were as many shoes as the dresses, smiles Narula who designed a skirt out of a pink trench coat. Kapoor is also wearing dresses from the house of Dolce and Gabbana and Just Cavalli.
Commenting on the swimsuit,Narula said,The black swimsuit was part of a scene and she carries it very well. I designed her swimsuit for Tashan as well. And with every dress,Narula has gone for a new look. We have created a new kind of a hair style and make up with each dress. Kareena has carried off every single garment fabulously and has added a lot of panache and oomph to the look, gushes Narula. Up next,he is working with Kapoor on Rensil DSilvas film Jihad alongside beau Saif Ali Khan and is styling Lara Dutta for Sajid Nadiadwalas film Housefull.
