Five personnel from the Karawal Nagar police station were injured when a police team tried to stop angry residents of the area from beating two boys, who the residents alleged had kidnapped two minor girls.
Police, however, said the allegations of kidnapping against the boys were false and arrested at least 12 persons on charges of rioting and damaging public property.
Around 9 am on Tuesday, the police control room was informed about an alleged kidnapping and rape of two minor girls.
The complainants claimed that the girls had been confined in a house at Shiv Vihar area of Karawal Nagar, Northeast Delhi. But, even before a police team could get to the spot, angry residents barged into the house and beat the two boys, police said.
Police said when they urged the residents not to get violent, they pelted stones at the station house officer’s vehicle and beat him along with an assistant sub-inspector, a sub-inspector and two constables. The angry mob also torched a motorcycle and damaged a PCR van. The police had to call in reinforcements to quell the violence.
Police said when the two girls were questioned, they denied being kidnapped. They told police that the two boys were their friends whom they visited regularly.
“They told us that they know the boys and had gone to meet them. They said that one of the boys had picked them up on his bike from their school. While one of the boys was the relative of a girl, the other boy was her friend,” a police officer said.
The residents, however, refused to hear any explanation, and instead, pelted stones on police personnel. Among the injured were SHO Jasod Singh Mehta, SI Manoj, ASI Yogesh Tyagi and constables Promod and Rajender.
The five were taken to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital and treated. Mehta is learnt to have suffered head injuries and was discharged in the evening.
Police have registered a case of rioting and till evening, were in the process of making arrests.
DCP (Northeast) R A Sanjeev said, “More than 12 persons have been arrested. We have registered a case of rioting, damage to public property, deterring public servant from discharge of duty. We are investigating the matter and are trying to identify the people who instigated the mob to indulge in violence. . The two girls were handed over safely to their families and the boys were let off.”
