The senior citizens forum of South Extension will be get to run its own recreation centre if the proposal put before the standing committee of the South corporation is approved.
On the requests of Ajay Maken,Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, and Farhad Suri,Leader of Opposition,a proposal has been forwarded to the standing committee. Suri said it would be advisable to handover the centre to citizens as they would maintain it the way they want.
A new building has been constructed on the premises of the community hall in South Extension-II. The old community hall has been converted to a senior citizens recreational centre, said a senior official of the South corporation.
In a letter requesting the handover of the recreation centre, the senior citizens forum has agreed to arrange for proper facilities at their own cost and pay for water and electricity consumed by them. The forum will also be responsible for the centres security.
According to the corporations officials, there is no policy for allotment of centres or halls to associations or non-governmental organisations.
We are in need of a fresh policy on all these matters. Earlier,we had handed over a community centre to an RWA in South Delhi, an official said.
However, the officials said that the approval will solve the problem of the community service department managing these centres as the residents using it will maintain the facilities themselves.
We have 19 senior citizen recreational centres which the department is finding difficult to manage due to shortage of staff. Thus,it will be appropriate to give the centre to the forum, an official said.
