Eight persons, including four children and two women, were killed when the bus they were travelling in collided head on with a dumper near Borikothi area on the Ferozpur Jhirka road in Mewat on Thursday.
Police said all of them died on the spot due to the impact of the collision. Police said the eight were travelling in a local bus, which plied from Firozpur Jhirka to Borikothi and beyond on a daily basis.
The victims were all locals of the Mewat district, police said. Some of them have been identified as Shakil,Rahul,Rahila,Rahul (another child was named Rahul),Mohina and Ratti Khan. Two of the adults and three of the children were male.
Police officials, who rushed to the spot after the accident, said the impact of the collision was such that the front of the bus was completely damaged. The driver of the dumper managed to flee the spot, police said.
Police sources said, prima facie,it seemed that both the vehicles were travelling at a high speed. The bus may have tried to overtake another vehicle and in the process hit the dumper approaching from the other side.
It seems that the bus driver was trying to overtake another vehicle when he failed in his judgement and hit the dumper head on, SP Mewat Sukhbir Singh said.
Although police have seized the vehicles,no arrests have yet been made.
We do not know whether the driver of the bus or that of the dumper were under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place. We are investigating the exact reason behind the incident, a senior police officer said.
