]The Enforcement Directorate arrested former TMC MP Kanwar Deep Singh on Wednesday under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
He was produced before a court which sent him to ED custody till January 16, PTI quoted official sources as saying.
The agency had carried out searches on the premises of Singh and his associates in September 2019. Singh has previously been the chairman of Alchemist group and the ED is probing him as part of two money laundering cases.
While Singh has been Rajya Sabha MP from TMC in the past, party members said “was no longer involved” in its affairs.
The agency has claimed to have recovered Rs 35 lakh in cash, 10,000 USD, “property papers and documents pertaining to circuitous financial transactions from his official residence in Delhi”. “During searches, a number of documents reflecting the circular nature of transactions, digital evidences and property documents are seized at the official residence of K D Singh in Delhi cash of Rs 32 lakhs along with Foreign Exchange worth 10,000 USD was found and seized,” an ED statement had said.
The searches in 2019 were carried out at seven locations in New Delhi and Chandigarh, including registered offices of 14 group companies of Alchemist Group, official residence of Singh at Tughlaq lane in New Delhi, his residence at Chandigarh and the homes of two directors in different companies, the statement had said.
The ED had initiated its probe into the affairs of Alchemist Group in 2018 on the basis of FIRs registered by Kolkata Police against Singh, his son Karandeep Singh, M/S Alchemist Township India Limited, M/S Alchemist Holdings Limited and various other group companies and their directors for allegedly cheating thousands of customers and investors. “Kanwar Deep Singh through companies… raised huge amount of money from thousands of customers in the garb of investments by luring them of high returns and also against sale/booking of plots and flats etc… these funds… were not used for the intended purpose and were diverted/siphoned off to various group companies,” the ED had said.
Singh’s arrest triggered a verbal duel in poll-bound Bengal.
TMC MP Sougata Roy said, “I don’t want to comment. K D Singh is neither with the TMC nor an MP.” TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said Singh should have been arrested earlier. He said BJP vice-president and former TMC leader Mukul Roy was the reason why Singh was allowed entry into the TMC. The allegation has been denied by Roy.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said, “Everyday either their (TMC) leaders are being arrested or are leaving the party. The BJP is continuously growing in Bengal. We are playing practice match before the final. Who will be arrested is CBI’s and ED’s call.”
Left Front Legislature Party leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “He should have been arrested a long time ago.”
