Tihar inmates are working on a unique project that will help build low-cost terrace gardens in the city. The inmates are manufacturing prefabricated grass lawns called Coco Lawn,as part of their vocational training.
The prefabricated grass lawn, manufactured by a team of 50 prisoners,is made from waste generated inside the prison and wood dust (waste material available in the furniture manufacturing unit of the prisons) and coconut waste.
The lawn would consist of pre-grown vegetables, medicinal and ornamental plants.
Tihar spokesperson Sunil Kumar Gupta said,We are giving vocational training to prisoners. These days, people cannot afford to have a lawn outside their house, keeping in mind the growing number of flats in cities. Terrace gardens that have come into existence now are very expensive and everyone cannot afford them. The prefabricated lawns being manufactured by prisoners are much cheaper when compared to the ones found in the market (Rs 4000 for 10×2 sq feet lawn as compared to Rs 10,000 for the same charged by builders) and are environment-friendly. Now,anyone can order a terrace garden.
The grass lawn has a layer of coconut and wood waste laid on a sheet of coir, with a layer of organic manure spread on it.
One can grow grass, vegetables and even aromatic plants on the lawn.
It is cost effective as the grass grown on these lawns germinates six to seven times faster than on other lawns. The length and width of the lawn can be tailored depending on the requirement of the customer, a Prisons officer said.
Apart from the lawns, the manure that was used to grow the grass and plants is also prepared by inmates.
Eighty per cent of the waste produced by Delhi prisons is organic. This includes waste from kitchens, langar, leftovers, leaves, and so on. All of this used to go to the dump. Now,we have made pits where all the waste is collected and a compost is made. The organic waste is put in the compost in the and organic soil substitute is formed, a spokesperson said.
The Prisons officer said they are in touch with builders, who are interested in buying lawns prepared by the prisoners. They will also put up these lawns on display at a few malls and shopping complexes.
The revenue generated from the sale of these lawns would be used for the welfare of the inmates, the Prisons officer said.
