The University of Delhi has set up an inquiry committee after a student alleged harassment by a professor and posted videos linked to the alleged incident on social media, which was widely shared over the weekend. The incident has prompted calls for an independent investigation from student groups.

In the videos, posted last week, the student alleged that she was threatened by her Head of Department (HoD) after she accused a professor of misconduct on social media. According to the student, the HoD asked her to take down the videos and warned her of serious academic consequences if she did not comply. “Delete all the reels you posted against the professor. We can ruin a lot for you,” — this is what she was told, she alleged.

The student further claimed that she was denied her admit card for semester-end exams and subjected to sustained pressure from fellow students to withdraw her allegations. She also alleged that some students backed the professor in exchange for internal assessment marks.

Speaking to The Indian Express on Sunday, Rajni Abbi, Director of Delhi University’s South Campus, said no formal complaint had been lodged by the student so far. However, she said that the Vice-Chancellor had directed the formation of a three-member committee to examine the matter after the videos began circulating widely on social media.

“Since the video has been doing rounds on social media, the Vice-Chancellor suggested that a three-member committee be constituted to investigate the matter and see whether the allegations have any merit,” Abbi said, adding that the university had been trying to contact the student and her family. “There has been no response to phone calls.”

Abbi, who is also chairperson of the committee, said the panel was expected to submit its report within the next two to three days.

She also said that the university had been informed that the student’s attendance was “quite poor” and that the administration had received several written complaints from classmates regarding the student’s behaviour. These aspects, she said, would also be examined by the committee.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), in a statement issued Saturday, said it had taken “serious note” of the video and demanded an immediate investigation. The student outfit called for a “fair, transparent, and independent inquiry” to establish the facts of the case.

“Repeated occurrence of such incidents raises serious questions about the reputation and credibility of Delhi University,” the ABVP said, adding that such allegations create insecurity and distrust among students and parents. The organisation stressed that the safety, dignity, and rights of female students must remain paramount and that the process of justice should be impartial and lawful.
