Delhi University’s sky-high cut-offs left many students disappointed at not being able to make the college of their choice in the first list. As a result, not many turned up on the first day of admission.

While student outfits blamed the high-cut offs for this, the university administration and colleges said the crowd was thin only because it was the first day of admission and that more students would pour in on Friday once they made up their mind.

Meanwhile, many dejected students could be seen turning back as they couldn’t make the cut-off. Student outfits like the All India Students’ Association held protests and burnt copies of the cut-offs outside the Arts Faculty, North Campus.

“I wanted admission in BCom (Hons) in either Kirori Mal College (KMC) or Ramjas but I haven’t made the cut-off. I scored 95.25 per cent. I could have easily got through Narsee Monjee College of Commerce in Mumbai but I chose to come here. I regret it now,” Ankita, a student from Varanasi, said. KMC and Ramjas have asked for 97.25 per cent and 97.75 per cent respectively for the course.

For, Raksha Dubey, also from Varanasi, the situation was doubly hard. “I am a national level basketball player but I couldn’t clear the fitness test. Otherwise I may have got admission. Now with 91.25 per cent marks, I can’t make it to BSc Physics in KMC,” she said. Physics in KMC has a cut-off of 97 per cent.

Among the lucky few who could clear the cut-off, there was a complication because certain state boards like Kerala and UP did not release the marksheet and colleges allegedly refused to admit them on the basis of provisional marksheets. “We want to take admission in BCom (Hons) in Rajdhani College and we’ve cleared the cut-off. But we’re from Kerala and the state has not released the marksheet yet. The college is saying that they cannot give us admission on the basis of our provisional marksheet,” Vishnu and Salman from Kerala said. The college administration could not be reached for a comment.

Dean of Students’ Welfare J M Khurana, said, “The Supreme Court has said that one must have all the documents while taking admission. It is the college’s prerogative if they want to consider provisional marksheets.”
