A portion of Patparganj Road caved in near Rashid Market on Saturday morning and the rear wheel of a low-floor bus, which belongs to the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC),got stuck in the crater.

The road had to be blocked for over six hours as no crane could be arranged to tow away the bus.

Residents claimed a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) pipeline was recently repaired at the spot, leading to the cave-in. “It seems that despite repairing the line, there was leakage in the pipeline and water collected below the road, eventually leading to the road caving in,” a senior DJB official said.

The bus was removed after six hours as the DJB refused to arrange for a crane, claiming the bus was DTC’s property.

“The Delhi government is boasting about holding the Commonwealth Games and it takes them more than six hours to remove a bus. It is a pitiable situation that the Delhi Police had to struggle between various civic agencies to have the bus removed,” said local BJP MLA Dr Harshvardhan.
