A Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus hit a garbage collection cart, killing an eight-year-old boy and injuring his 13-year-old brother. Police said the incident was reported from South Delhi’s Mahipalpur area on Friday afternoon. The driver has been arrested, police said.

According to police, a DTC bus headed towards Anand Vihar from Gurgaon was passing through the crowded Mahipalpur crossing when it hit the cart which Sonu (8) and Pinku (13) were riding in. Sonu was flung off his seat and died on the spot. Pinku is critical, police said.

“After collecting scrap, the two brothers were crossing the road on their vehicle when they were hit by the bus. After the accident, the driver Ashutosh (35) got off the bus to inspect the scene. When he realised that he had hit two children, he got into the bus and drove off,” an officer said.

Police said people in the area chased the bus and forced the driver to stop. He was then handed over to police.

A case or rash and negligent driving has been registered against the driver at Vasant Kunj (South) police station. The two children were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where Sonu was declared brought dead, police said.
