A police constable and a student were killed in an accident involving a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus near Monastery Market on Ring Road, Monday night.

According to police, the incident took place between 10.15 pm and 10.30 pm when the DTC bus plying on the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT-Nand Nagari route veered out of control, causing it to climb onto the pavement, strike a billboard pole, and hit the two people before colliding with the road divider.

The victims were rushed to Parmanand Hospital at Civil Lines, where they were declared dead on arrival.

The constable was identified as Victor, 27, from Nagaland. He sustained injuries to his face, head, and neck. Posted at the Civil Lines police station since June last year, he was on night patrol duty, having departed from the station on his motorcycle shortly after 9.45 pm, said police.

“We worked in the same police station for the last two years… he really loved playing football,” said Constable Getshete Doulo, who was Constable Victor’s colleague and also hailed from Nagaland, albeit from a different district and tribe.

The second victim was identified as 23-year-old Satyapriya, a BTech student studying in Kanpur. Police said he lived in Gurgaon and was in Delhi for some personal work.

The driver of the bus, Vinod Kumar, 57, has been taken into police custody. A DTC driver since 2010, Kumar was uninjured in the accident.
