It’s the stuff fairy tales and mushy Hollywood films are made of — a young American supermodel marrying a much older prince from a land far away. Though one of the 10 richest royals in the world,Prince Rahim Aga Khan (the eldest son of Aga Khan IV) is lesser known in this part of the world. His wife,American supermodel Kendra Spears (a regular on the Milan and Paris ramp),now rechristened Princess Salwa, isn’t a familiar face here either. However, their wedding photograph is already creating a buzz in India. And it has much to do with designer Manav Gangwani. News of the Delhi-based designer having dressed up the royals for their nuptials held on August 31 in a palace in Geneva was broken by the bride herself. The Princess posted on Twitter: “Thank you @ManavGangwani for the beyond-gorgeous sari! And thank you Naomi Campbell for the introduction”. The pre-draped ivory sari, designed by Gangwani, boasted of intricate hand-embroidered Jamawar work along with antique gold-silver glass beads and Swarovski crystals. It was paired with a traditional blouse. Prince Rahim, who is the executive director of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development as well as the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance, complemented his bride in a classic sherwani, also in ivory, made from pure silk brocade, which he wore over an off-white shirt and trouser, all of which were designed by Gangwani. “The outfits were created after months of hard work,” said the designer.
