The tables,it seems, have turned on Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party. For at least one week now,a pre-recorded telephonic message has been asking voters if Kejriwal can be trusted considering he “betrayed” Anna Hazare. The anonymous message comes just weeks after Kejriwal began his own pre-recorded broadcasts, which accused Congress and BJP leaders of corruption.

The recorded telephone call asks voters to be wary of Kejriwal. “A man who betrayed Anna Hazare is capable of betraying anybody and everybody,” the message says. The identity of the caller or the message’s sponsor remains unknown.

Despite curiosity over the anti-AAP messages, party members said they are not worried. “Several of our volunteers began complaining of this issue about one week ago,but we believe this is just some stunt by the Congress or the BJP. We are fast making inroads into their vote share and they are desperate enough to stoop to any level,” a senior party leader alleged.

He said the AAP had no intention of lodging a complaint against the anonymous message.

According to sources in the AAP,Congress and BJP have been using similar rhetoric against Kejriwal and the party for at least a year now. “If you hear and read statements from the Congress and BJP about us,they are the same. The BJP says the Congress propped us up to divide the vote and vice versa. Our intention is to defeat them both,” a senior leader said.

He said such “crass” messages would only serve to marshal public support for the AAP.

The AAP has also had to deal with protests and allegations against certain candidates they have fielded for the Delhi Assembly elections. Even as many in the party alleged that their rivals were running a smear campaign, senior leaders maintained that they had adopted a zero-tolerance approach about corruption.

“We want to make it clear if anyone comes up with even an iota of truth about candidates with a tainted background — not even proof — we can assure them that we would probe ourselves threadbare. If a candidate is found guilty, his nomination would be cancelled immediately,” AAP spokesperson Manish Sisodia said.

The AAP recently struck down the nomination of its Shahdara candidate after receiving information regarding police cases registered against him.
