All major road in Delhi,especially the ones surrounding major markets witnessed heavy traffic jams during peak hours on Tuesday. However,unlike other traffic jams,people confined to their vehicles for hours seemed patient on Diwali eve.
Harleen Kaur,a commuter driving from Lajpat Nagar market who was stuck at Moolchand in South Delhi for half and hour,said,“It is festive season,jams are bound to happen. We went for shopping and I am happy. There is no use getting hyper about it. Traffic is annoying,but we are in festive mood,so it is ok.”
In South Delhi,the density of vehicles was very high,which lead to sluggish movement of vehicles in the area. “The difficult stretch was from Moolchand to Ashram. Most people were out to buy Diwali gifts so the area adjoining markets were choked. South Extension also witnessed traffic snarls,” said DCP,South (Traffic) Prem Nath.
In Central Delhi,there was sluggish movement of traffic on Barakhamba Road,in Mandi House and Connaught Place.
“There was a minor jam near Bengali Market as people went to buy sweets and gifts. Otherwise,the movement of traffic was smooth. We had deployed extra traffic personnel to ensure smooth vehicle movement during the festive season,” he said.
Vikas Marg in East Delhi witnessed jams as out of the three lanes on the stretch,two are closed by Delhi Jal Board.
“Out of three lanes,only one- and-half lanes are available for vehicular movement. The rest is occupied by DJB as work is on. As the density of vehicle was very high in the evening,the stretch faced a heavy jam,” police said.
