Angry residents from Silani, Hasanpur, and other villages nearby carried out demonstrations, delaying the removal of Monika’s body until 11 amMonika Kumari, 17, was on her way to school in Sohna on Monday when she was compelled to walk on the road because the footpath was waterlogged. Distracted by his phone, a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly driving a crane on the Sohna-Palwal road did not notice her and mowed her down.
The minor, employed by the crane owner a few months ago, then allegedly abandoned the crane and attempted to escape. But he was caught by bystanders who handed him over to the police. Locals rushed Monika to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead, said officers.
The incident took place near the Silani bus stand at 8.15 am.
Monika was a resident of a village in Nuh and a Class 12 student.
“The boy was using his phone and did not notice the victim. Monika avoided the footpath due to waterlogging from Sunday’s rain and was walking on the road,” said Sohna Sadar SHO Jagjit Kumar.
Soon after the incident, the teen’s death triggered protests on the Sohna-Palwal road. Angry residents from Silani, Hasanpur, and other villages nearby carried out demonstrations, delaying the removal of Monika’s body until 11 am.
However, senior police officers intervened and assured action against the accused. The body was then sent for an autopsy.
Police registered an FIR at Sadar Sohna police station against the juvenile and the crane owner under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “We have apprehended the juvenile, and we will make the crane owner join the investigation too soon,” Kumar added.
The victim’s mother, a widow, will receive compensation as per government rules, police added. “We recovered Monika’s school bag and handed it to her mother,” a police spokesperson said.
