Almost eight months after a 24-year-old Indian-origin woman was murdered allegedly by her husband in London, police sources said they examined around two dozen witnesses and relied mainly on the statement of the victim’s family recorded before the sub-divisional magistrate to build their case.
Police said they also relied on call data records of mobile numbers of the accused; bank account statement of the woman and her father showing transactions; and the post-mortem report.
The husband remains on the run. The Indian Express had earlier reported that he was spotted withdrawing money from a bank in Gurgaon in March.
A chargesheet in the case is learnt to have been filed by the Delhi Police in the Dwarka court on June 10. It is learnt that the police have named six people allegedly linked to the case — the husband of the woman, his parents, sister, and his aunt and uncle. His uncle is a Delhi policeman who is currently suspended.
The charges, police said, include dowry death and husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty. The FIR was registered on December 3 last year on a complaint by the woman’s father.
On November 14, 2024, the woman’s body was found in the boot of her husband’s car at Brisbane Road in East London. A post-mortem examination at the Leicester Royal Infirmary showed she’d been strangled. The accused is also charged with two counts of rape, sexual assault, and controlling or coercive behaviour.
In their status report filed earlier, police said the victim’s body was received in India on December 1, 2024, along with the coroner’s certificate in which the cause of death was mentioned as ‘manual strangulation’.
“During the investigation, the complainant had provided some emails that were sent to him by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) of the United Kingdom police department. It mentioned that at 11.34 pm, a friend of woman ‘A’ informed the Northamptonshire Police that he received a call from the husband of woman ‘A’ revealing that he had murdered woman ‘A’ on November 11 and fled to India. Woman ‘A’ was in her husband’s car, parked in Ilford. The Northamptonshire Police reported the matter to the Metropolitan Police, who traced the car at 12.40 am on November 14, in which woman ‘A’ was found dead,” the status report read.
The victim’s father, in his complaint to the police, also mentioned he had paid Rs 15 lakh to the accused’s family for a visa to the UK.
In March, the husband’s parents were arrested in the case. Currently, the father is in judicial custody while the mother is out on regular bail. The sister, uncle and aunt are out on anticipatory bail and have joined the probe.
The next date of hearing in the case is on July 1.
