The hazy image of a pillion rider wearing a striped T-shirt and white trousers as seen in a CCTV camera, and a vital tip-off from a horse-driven tonga owner about the location of one of the accused – This was all that the Delhi Police needed to crack the murder of a 25-year-old woman in Northeast Delhi a few weeks ago.
On April 12, around 12.40 pm, police received a call that the body of a woman had been dumped near Krishna Public School in Karawal Nagar. Efforts to identify the deceased failed; meanwhile, post-mortem revealed the woman had died of asphyxia due to ligature strangulation. A case of murder was lodged and a probe initiated.
When CCTV cameras in the area were scanned, police found the footage of two men on a motorcycle with a woman seated between them.
DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey had said: “The registration number of the motorcycle was unclear due to poor resolution of the cameras. The helpful feature was the striped T-shirt and white trousers of the pillion rider.”
Further, the route of the bike-borne assailants was traced to almost 12 to 13 kms away, deep inside Teliwara area of Farsh Bazaar.
On April 20, police teams found another footage: That of a man in striped T-shirt carrying the body of a girl on his shoulder and a woman walking right behind. The DCP said the duo was identified as Vineet and his sister Parul Chowdhary while the deceased’s identity was revealed as Rohina Naz alias Mahi.
Police reached their house but found it locked; neighbours told the cops that the siblings had moved out, one after the other.
“She (Parul) has used a horse tonga to shift with her belongings and two children…the tonga was traced to a stand at Loni border…the cart owner told the police about the house where he had dropped Parul and her children, around 7 kms away from her Teliwara house,” DCP Tirkey said.
Parul was arrested from her Krishna Nagar house on April 21. During interrogation, she revealed that Vineet and Rohina, who were in a relationship, used to live with her. The DCP said: “In 2019, Vineet and his father Vinay Pawar were convicted in a murder case that had taken place in Baghpat in 2017.”
Vineet walked out of jail on bail in November last year. Since then, Rohina had been insisting on marriage which Vineet’s family was not in favour of since she belonged to a different community, said police.
“Vineet and Parul decided to sell her off…when Rohina sensed this, she retaliated. It was then that the siblings decided to eliminate her,” said an officer.
On April 12, Vineet strangulated Rohina after a fight and stuffed her body in a diwan.
In the evening, Vineet called his associate. Vineet carried Rohina’s body on his shoulder while Parul carried the chunni (stole) and other clothes that her brother used to drape around the corpse, said police.
It didn’t take long for the cops to realise that the woman captured by the CCTV was, in fact, Rohina’s body.
“Vineet and his associate drove around with the dead body stacked between them for more than 12 kilometres…they finally dumped it outside a house in the dark in Karawal Nagar,” said the DCP.
Parul was the first to be arrested; Vineet, who had left for his village in Kakripur in Baghpat, and his associate were arrested later.
