Royal Rangers Football Club had a good start to their quarterfinal league campaign of the DSA Senior Division when they registered a 1-0 win over Simla Youngs FC at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex on Tuesday. Although Simla Youngs especially through Japanese mid fielder Taku dominated much of the mid field play, they were unable to create incisive opportunities upfront.

Of the few chances that were created, the players upfront particularly Nigerian Onome Akporotu,Prem And Sobin Cherian muffed easy goal scoring opportunities. Royal Rangers got off to an unusually sluggish start and the fact that they didn’t go suffer a deficit would largely be due to the stellar efforts of goalkeeper Yogesh Kumar who had an excellent game under the bar. At the half way mark both teams were tied goalless.

The break in an otherwise listless game came after ends were changed,in the 53rd minute. A penalty was awarded by referee Ashok Ghosh to Rangers after Simla Youngs defender Ashish Kumar clumsily handled the ball inside the box. The kick was successfully converted by Rangers’ Nigerian striker Isaiah Olegun.

The goal seemed to provide momentum into the game as both as play opened up. However both teams will have to fault their strikers who failed to convert plenty of easy chances. In between the opportunities though there was plenty of sloppy play with Rangers’ Kunchok being shown a yellow card.
