A 19-year-old B. Pharma student who died after battling injuries sustained in a road accident is the first bone donor this year at All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
His family also donated his liver, kidneys, heart valves and corneas Friday. Doctors said his lower limbs were preserved at the cadaver bone laboratory.
The day also saw a heart donated by the family of a 34-year-old victim of a road accident at Alwar bypass road in Bhiwadi transported from Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurgaon to AIIMS and transplanted on a 13-year-old boy.
According to AIIMS authorities, the B. Pharma student was hit by an unknown vehicle on September 25 while riding pillion on a bike.
“He was admitted in a private hospital and referred here. After 13 days ICU stay, when his condition showed no improvement, we informed the family about his possible brain death on October 8. The organs were retrieved on Friday,” an official said.
Doctors said his heart valves had been preserved in AIIMS CTVS Cadaver Heart Valve Bank. His liver and kidneys have been transplanted and the patients are doing well after surgery.
For transporting the live cadaveric heart from FMRI to AIIMS, a green corridor was created on the stretch. This led to a distance of 22 km being covered in just about 39 minutes during peak morning traffic hours. The heart retrieval team from AIIMS left Gurgaon at about 9.17 am.
The heart came to the aid of the teen battling for survival. The accident victim’s family was counselled and they agreed to donate his liver and kidneys too. His liver was transplanted on a 40-year-old man.
One kidney was transplanted to save the life of a 31-year-old woman, while the other was transplanted on a 47-year-old man.
