The Delhi Police on Sunday said they arrested a life convict who had jumped parole three years ago from Guwahati. Nitin Verma, 42, was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his parents and pregnant wife in 2008. On April 19, 2008, the police found the victims killed with a sharp weapon at their house in the Palam village.
“There were multiple wounds on the bodies and the floor was soaked up with blood,” the police had said. Nothing was found or stolen from the house, and a case was filed. During the investigation, it was discovered that Verma had also been admitted to DDU Hospital in an injured condition.
The police said, “During the investigation, it was found that Nitin Verma had murdered his pregnant wife and parents. The accused committed these murders due to an extramarital affair which his wife and parents disapproved of and he had a quarrel with them over it.”
After committing the murders, Verma staged a fake accident to claim he was not at his home during the incident, citing a road mishap. However, the police discovered his deception and officially arrested him in Palam. He was charged with the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment. Following release on Covid-induced parole, he absconded for over a year.
The Crime Branch (New Delhi Range) formed a police team to apprehend the absconding. The police gathered information about the suspect’s family, friends, local contacts, and technical details. After more than 15 days of effort involving stakeouts at various locations, interviews with several individuals, and analysis of hundreds of call detail records (CDRs), it was discovered that the accused was employed in Daryaganj and was involved in selling electronic parts from Delhi to Assam at inflated prices.
“A search was conducted and it was discovered that the suspect had left Daryaganj a month earlier. Additional technical details were obtained based on the information gathered, revealing that the suspect’s location was in Guwahati, Assam,” said the police.
Verma was observed changing his mobile handset, SIM cards, and appearance frequently to avoid the police and evade arrest. After a raid led by Inspector Vivek Malik and supervised by ACP Umesh Barthwal in parts of Guwahati, Verma was ultimately arrested.
