A perfect getaway for Delhiites with adventure sports is being built at Najafgarh by Delhi Tourism. This eco-tourism complex, coming up near the Najafgarh drain at Kanganheri and Chhawla, will also have camping space for those who want to stay overnight, among its attractions.
Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation Ltd (DTTDC) is at present looking at hiring a consultant to do an evaluation study and shortlist private companies to operate and maintain the complex. The entire process is likely to take at least six to eight months.
The concept is to providing space for families to come with their camping equipment and spend an entire day here. Emphasis will be laid on developing it as a green camping site, said a Delhi Tourism official.
Around 11 acres of land at Kanganheri was given to us by the Flood and Irrigation department of the Delhi government. Platforms for camps, with attached washrooms, have just been constructed. The cycle track at the periphery of the complex is also ready. Trees have also been planted in the area keeping in mind the concept of eco-tourism, he said.
The camping area will also have restaurants, naturotherapy center, etc.
We will also develop small islands like treasure and tarzan islands, and a balloon plaza where one can go on a hot air-ballon ride, added the official.
The cost of developing the complex will be around Rs 4.5 crore. An artificial water body connecting Kanganheri to another site at Chhawla, two kms away, will also be developed. This will be the second phase of the project. People can use a boat to go from Kanganheri to Chhawla. Jettys will also be available, added the official.
Chhawla will have a sunset point,restaurant,tree-top club houses etc for relaxation. Elevated walkways will also be constructed along this complex. Delhi Tourism is also looking at introducing animal rides at a later stage.
We are in the process of hiring a consultant for this project who will help us shortlist a private company for running and maintaining the complex for us. People camping will also be charged for using the facilities. The complex will provide a perfect getaway for people wanting to head out of the city in search of adventure, said the official.
Delhi Tourism is also looking at introducing water sports around the Signature Bridge once it is completed.
