Delhi to get 3rd skywalk at Madhuban Chowk, ‘a pedestrian blackspot’, by November

The skywalk, which is nearly 60% complete, will provide safe pedestrian passage between Pitampura Metro Station, Madhuban Chowk Metro Station and Rohini District Court. Once complete, pedestrians will not have to risk their lives to cross the busy Outer Ring Road, said officials. “It will make commuting between these key locations safe for Metro commuters, and others, including court staff and lawyers who visit Rohini Court regularly,” said Gupta. The Chief Minister said that a safe pedestrian crossing between the metro stations and nearby destinations will also promote sustainable, public transport-based mobility. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 9.62 crore and is expected to be completed by November 30.

Officials said that earlier the Public Works Department (PWD) had a plan to construct an 800-metre-long footover bridge (FOB), connecting the two Metro corridors at the Pitampura station. However, later, it decided to go for a skywalk connecting the Rohini district court directly with the Pitampura Metro Station on the Red Line. With a new metro station coming up under the Phase IV Metro project, another arm of this skywalk will connect Janakpuri West to RK Ashram on the Pink Line.

Besides, the dedicated pedestrian route at Madhuban Chowk will also help improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. “The project will provide a safe and convenient pedestrian facility in an area where there is currently no grade-separated facility for crossing the road,” said an official.

The skywalk is being constructed in three parts — one connecting the two Metro stations, another part will end near Rohini Court, and the third part will connect to the road junction leading to Prashant Vihar and Wazirpur.

“There are plans to increase the grills on the central verge, so that people use the skywalk instead of risking their lives to cross the busy road,” said the official.
