Early Sunday morning, 36-year-old Rajiv Kumar, a security guard at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3, stepped out of his office cab near Mahipalpur flyover. His night shift had just ended.
As he was trying to cross the road, police said an SUV — a Mahindra Thar Roxx — honked incessantly from behind. Rajiv told him to stop honking. The SUV’s driver then told Rajiv that if he crossed the road before his car passed by, he would be run over by it. Rajiv stood his ground — and was run over — said police.
Both of Rajiv’s legs are now fractured. He is the only earning person in his 8-member family.
Police said they arrested the driver, Vijay Lale (24), for allegedly hitting Rajiv.
Rajiv, who works at Firewall Securities, has to undergo an operation where a rod will be placed to support his legs.
Recounting the incident, he claimed, “There were three-four youths in the vehicle. I was crossing the road when they started honking from behind. They initially asked me to give them my watchman’s stick. The driver then asked me not to cross the road or else he would run over me. They then started discussing who wanted to drive while running over me.”
“I then stepped back and asked them to drive ahead. Still, they moved the vehicle towards me. As it came closer, I asked them, ‘What harm have I done to you? (maine kya bigada hai tumhara?’),” said Rajiv.
Even as he tried to reason with them, the accused hit him with the car, left him injured on the side of the road, and fled from the scene.
Video footage of the incident showed Rajiv initially being pushed back by the vehicle as he tried to talk to Lale. Lale then speeds up, hitting the security guard and driving away.
According to police, the incident took place at 6.15. “Rajiv Kumar was intentionally hit by a four-wheeler (Mahindra Thar) driver at a signal near the Mahipalpur flyover. He sustained multiple fractures to his legs and ankle,” said DCP (Southwest) Surender Chaudhary.
Police said Rajiv made the PCR call himself and lodged a complaint.
To trace the vehicle, police relied on CCTV footage. And by 12 pm, they found Lale. “The offending vehicle was identified as a black Mahindra Thar, through CCTV footage, and the owner was traced. Thereafter, a notice under Section 133 of the Motor Vehicles Act was served to him. Lale was then arrested and his vehicle seized,” said Chaudhary.
A case under sections 281 (rash driving) and 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the BNS was registered at the Vasant Kunj South police station.
For Rajiv, his concerns were not about the accident anymore. He was more worried about how he would care for his family back in Bihar. He has been working in the Capital for the past two years.
“My brother is sick, so his wife and two sons, my wife and child, and my father are all my responsibility. I don’t even know when my operation will happen and when I can get back to work,” he said.
According to police data, attempt to murder cases have dipped in 2025 to 168 as compared to 203 in 2024.
