A 30-year-old man, who works as a priest at a temple, and his wife have been arrested for allegedly killing a man she was having an affair with, police said. Later, the duo lit a room inside the temple on fire, hoping that the body would burn with it.
Police said the incident took place in Gandhi Nagar area in Shahdara, and the priest, Lakhan, made a PCR call and said that the lock of the entrance to the temple’s store room was broken, and that smoke was emanating from there. He also told police that a man appeared to be stuck inside the room, and that he has probably been charred to death.
After police reached the spot, they found the body of Chandra Shekhar (35) in a burnt condition. However, suspicion mounted after they found that the body had started decomposing and foul smell was already emanating from it, said a senior police officer.
“There were no signs of forced entry into the store room. When police started questioning Lakhan, he tried to mislead us. However, he later confessed to killing Shekhar,” the officer added.
He told police that he used to stay in Delhi while his wife used to stay in Mathura, where she had an affair with Shekhar.
Eventually, Lakhan and his wife lured Shekhar to come to Delhi. The couple took him to the temple’s store room, fed him sleeping pills, hit him multiple times on the head with a knife and then strangled him on Sunday, said the officer.
