Delhi Police book SpiceJet officials over provident fund dues worth over Rs 65 crore

The Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police has registered a case against SpiceJet MD Ajay Singh and three other top officials of the airline on cheating and criminal conspiracy charges in connection with provident fund (PF) dues.

“The FIR named Ajay Singh, Shiwani Singh (director), Anurag Bhargava (independent director), Ajay Chhotelal Aggarwal, and Manoj Kumar,” said a senior official of the wing.

As per the police, the case was registered on September 16 following a complaint lodged by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The EPFO claimed that SpiceJet had failed to remit over Rs 65.7 crore in PF contributions deducted from employees’ salaries.

The airline, which employs more than 10,000 workers, deducted 12 per cent of employees’ salaries towards the provident fund from June 2022 to July 2024 but did not credit the contributions to their PF accounts within the mandatory 15-day period, police sources said.

The airline in a statement said, “The case was filed before the company raised fresh funds through the Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP). Since then, the airline has cleared all pending salary and GST dues and made significant progress by depositing ten months of PF dues.”
