Delhi Police places hold on L-G order on virtual police deposition; lawyers call off strike 

More than two weeks after Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena issued a notification allowing police to virtually present evidence in courts from police stations, the Delhi Police has put on hold the directive until all stakeholders are heard by the Union Home Ministry. The decision comes against the backdrop of the Capital’s lawyers staging multiple protests calling for the withdrawal of the notification.

Following the Delhi Police’s decision to place a hold on L-G Saxena’s directive, the lawyers have now decided to call the strike off. “It has been decided that the Union Home Minister would meet the representatives of the Bar to discuss the issue with an open mind,” a statement from the office of the Commissioner of Police reads. “In the meantime, the operation of the said notification on the ground would only be carried out after hearing all stakeholders,” the statement adds.

The lawyers had earlier planned a march from Tis Hazari court complex to the L-G house to oppose the order. On 13 August 2025, Government of NCT(National Capital Territory) of Delhi issued a notification designating all police stations in NCT of Delhi as places for the purpose of presenting evidence and deposing before courts through video conferencing by police personnel only. However, concerns have been raised by members of the Bar Association in Delhi regarding the said notification.

In protest, the lawyers had been abstaining from work and protesting for the last six days. The co-ordination committee of All District Courts Bar Association of Delhi via their letter dated August 18, 2025 to the Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and through another letter dated August 20, 2025 to L-G Saxena had submitted their representation on this matter.
