Days after Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked by two men following a meeting with an AAP councillor in Northeast Delhi, Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested one of them.
Kumar was attacked on May 17 when he was leaving the Aam Aadmi Party’s New Usmanpur office after meeting the AAP councillor from Brahmpuri, Chhaya Sharma. The purported videos of the incident show a man, with a long beard and wearing a black shirt, shouting slogans of “Kanhaiya Bhaiya Zindabad” while holding a garland and a packet of rose petals.

He is seen approaching Kumar and then throwing ink on him even as another man slaps the Congress leader. Kumar’s supporters quickly surrounded the attackers and retaliated.

“Efforts are being made to round up the others,” said Joy Tirkey, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast).
Sharma, the AAP councillor who hosted the meeting with Kumar, filed a complaint with Delhi Police the same day. She alleged that when she attempted to intervene in the scuffle, the men manhandled her and threatened to kill her husband.

On Tuesday, the police arrested Ajay Kumar, alias Ranbir Bhatti, a 41-year-old man from New Usmanpur. A case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 354 (assault or criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (multiple people committing a criminal act with a common intention) was filed against him in connection with Sharma’s complaint.
Kumar, the Congress party’s Northeast Delhi constituency candidate, has alleged that the attackers were supported by sitting MP Manoj Tiwari, a charge denied by the BJP leader. Kumar is contesting against Tiwari, a two-time Bharatiya Janata Party MP from the Northeast Delhi constituency.
