The Delhi Police Thursday issued notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking information on the sexual harassment victims that he mentioned in his speech during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kashmir in January.

Police said they are ready to take legal action against the offenders but have not received a complaint so far.

Gandhi, during the yatra, addressed the media in Srinagar and talked about how women are still sexually assaulted in the country. “When I was walking, there were a lot of women who were crying… Few of them got emotional after seeing me. But there were women who told me they have been raped, they have been molested. Few said they were molested by their relatives/known persons. When I asked them if  I should call the police, they told me no and said they wanted me to know. They didn’t want to inform the police because they said they would face more issues. So, yahi humare desh ki sacchai hai,” he had said.

A senior police officer said they have taken cognizance of the public address and want to take legal action. “We saw multiple posts on Gandhi’s statement and sent a notice to him asking for details about the women and the incidents. We sent a questionnaire to get more details as none of the complainants or women approached us,” said the officer.

Reacting to the notice, the Congress said in a tweet, “A govt rattled by Shri Rahul Gandhi’s questions on PM Modi & Adani’s relationship hides behind its police. 45-days after Bharat Jodo Yatra was completed, Delhi Police has, via a notice, sought details of women who met him & spoke about harassment & violence they may have faced.”

It added, “We will respond to the notice in due course in accordance with law. This notice is yet another proof of a govt in panic and their latest salvo to weaken democracy, women empowerment, freedom of expression and role of the opposition. Images are self explanatory.”
