Chasing a lead in a case, two Delhi Police inspectors en route to Sonipat died after their car rammed into a stationary truck near the Kundli border on Monday night.

Police said Inspectors Dinesh Beniwal and Ranbir Singh Chahal, both in their late 30s, were on official duty when the accident took place around 11.30 pm. The impact of the collision crushed the car, killing the men on the spot, said police.

Delhi Police has registered an FIR under charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving against the truck driver and searches are on to find him. Though the reason behind the accident is still unclear, police said the victims might not have seen the truck due to the fog. The Haryana Police, however, are investigating if the truck was already parked on the road or braked suddenly.

DCP (Northwest) Jitendra Kumar Meena refused to reveal further details of the case, stating that it’s sensitive, and added that the investigation is ongoing.

The inspectors were posted in the Northwest district. While Beniwal was the Special Staff in-charge, Chahal was an Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) inspector at Adarsh Nagar police station. Police sources said the duo had left at night after receiving a “lead” in an important case.

Police said Beniwal was at the wheel. He is survived by his wife and their two children, aged 10 and 6. He and his team had recently apprehended the leader of the Panchal/Joga gang which is involved in several highway robberies, extortion, and assault cases. The Delhi and Rajasthan Police were looking for the accused and had declared a reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest.

Hailing from Haryana’s Jhajjar, Beniwal cleared the Delhi Police constable exam in 2007. However, he waited another year and passed the sub-inspector exam in 2008. He was inducted into the force in 2009. Police said he was made the in-charge of the Special Staff due to his diligent work and experience in catching hardened criminals. His younger brother is posted as an inspector with the CISF. His friends remember him as a hardworking officer.

Chahal joined the Delhi Police as a sub-inspector in 2008. Police said he was posted in the traffic unit and later in the security unit. He was recently transferred to Adarsh Nagar police station. During his service, he earned three commendation cards and a commendation roll for his “extraordinary work in policing”.

He is survived by his parents, wife, and two children. He was the sole breadwinner of the family.

His relative, Ramkumar, who is posted in the Finance Ministry, alleged, “We found out that Chahal and Beniwal were driving behind the accused (truck driver) who was driving rashly. He braked suddenly and Beniwal couldn’t stop the car in time… It was the driver’s fault. We want action against him.”
