According to the police, the encounter between the accused, Vinay, 36, and the police team took place behind the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Hospital around 10 pm, during a targeted operation to nab suspects involved in robberies and snatching cases in the area.
Vinay, who sustained a gunshot injury to his right leg, was immediately overpowered and shifted to a hospital, said the police.
The accused, a resident of Sultan Garden in Najafgarh, is a habitual offender with 56 cases registered against him. According to e-prison records, he was also involved in a shootout with Delhi Police’s Special Cell in 2021.
Acting on a tip-off, the police teams had been tracking the movements of the suspect, also called Mota, a hardened criminal with a long history of offences.

However, Vinay allegedly opened fire on the police party, and one of the bullets struck a bulletproof jacket worn by a member of the police team. In response, the police team returned fire in self-defence, during which the accused, the officer said.
Legal proceedings have been initiated, and further investigation is underway, the officer added.
