A 25-year-old woman and her 10-month-old infant died after their bike was hit from behind by a speeding truck on NH-24, near Masuri in Ghaziabad, Thursday, police said. They were in Ghaziabad for the treatment of their infant son, police said.
According to police, at the time of the incident, three adults — identified as Yusuf, his wife Shaheena, his mother Mobina — and the baby, Saif, were on the bike. Police said the mother-son duo, and Mobina were “flung off the bike on impact”. Yusuf, on the other hand, received minor injuries.
Police maintained that none of them were wearing helmets at the time of the incident. “It appears that the driver of the truck was speeding and lost control of his truck, following which he rammed into the bike,” said a senior police officer.
The driver of the truck, who was later arrested, and identified as Santosh, had fled the scene minutes after the incident. “There were protests, but police were able to control the enraged crowd, disperse them and ensure that vital NH-24 wasn’t blocked,” added the officer.
The family, hailing from Bulandshahr, had come to stay at a relative’s house at Vijay Nagar in Ghaziabad. “Saif was being treated by a doctor in Delhi. The family had come to Ghaziabad because it is easier to stay near Delhi. They were on their way back when the accident took place,” added the officer.
The accident took place on the highway near AKG Engineering College when the truck was hit from behind, police said, adding that the mother-son duo suffered “critical injuries”.
“The mother and son were rushed to a private hospital but couldn’t be saved. Her mother-in-law also suffered serious injuries but survived. She has been transferred to a hospital in Delhi,” added the officer.
