A day after the Delhi High Court ordered the resumption of cooked meals for homeless persons in shelters, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered the Chief Secretary to examine why the NGO providing food was not paid on time and ordered that pending complaints be addressed.
After the pandemic hit, NGO Akshay Patra Foundation was providing food at homeless shelters.
According to its complaint to the L-G, it had not been paid crores of rupees by the government for its services to date. The foundation stopped feeding the homeless persons at shelters last week.
The letter from the L-G office to the Chief Secretary said that several complaints of non-payment had been received, and this was causing “extreme hardship to the most marginalised sections of society”. Earlier, the Delhi government said that the payments were not cleared because of interference from bureaucrats.
“Though Akshay Patra is known for its charitable activities, certain officials of the Finance Department of Delhi had been blocking the payments for many months… the Standing Council clearly briefed about the intent of the Delhi government to provide free meals in the night shelters, one director of DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board) took a contrary stand in the High Court. A show-cause notice has been issued to the officer for taking a contrary stand,” the government said in a statement.
