Delhi News Highlights: Vinai Kumar Saxena, currently serving as the chairperson of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), will swear in as the new Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi on May 26, 2022. The swearing-in ceremony will start at 11 am in the Raj Niwas.

The structure of the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) started taking shape on Monday with the appointment of five departmental heads and allotment of office spaces to officials of erstwhile north and east civic bodies at its headquarters at the Civic Centre here, officials said. The unified MCD formally came into existence on Sunday, with IAS officers Ashwani Kumar and Gyanesh Bharti assuming charge as the new civic body’s special officer and commissioner, respectively

Lauding Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for sacking his health minister over graft charges, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said corruption is a betrayal with the nation which his party will not allow. Addressing a virtual press conference here, the Delhi chief minister said his AAP is a “diehard honest party” and will not tolerate corrupt activities. “We will not spare even our own leaders if they are found to be involved in corruption. We are proud of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann who immediately removed his minister found involved in corruption,” he said.

Delhi records 418 new Covid-19 cases, two deaths

Delhi reported 418 new Covid-19 cases and two virus-related fatalities on Tuesday. The positivity rate is now at 2.27 per cent. Currently there are 1,841 active cases in the national capital, after 394 patients recovered from the disease.

Decomposed body of woman found in Delhi

The decomposed and semi-naked body of an unidentified woman was found at a vacant farm near southwest Delhi's Ghitorni area on Tuesday, police said.

The woman's age is estimated to be between 25 and 35 years, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said, "The identity of the woman is yet to be ascertained. Appropriate legal action is being taken. The body has been shifted to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy." (PTI)

Sisodia meets Cambridge University faculty, discusses ongoing collaboration for training principals

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday met with the Cambridge University faculty to discuss the ongoing collaboration for training principals and educators and explore new ways to strengthen ties.

The meeting was a part of Sisodia's ongoing visit to the UK for the Education World Forum 2022.

Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio, discussed the idea of designing a joint certification course between Cambridge University and Delhi Teachers University in the areas of school leadership, curriculum development, and other related fields. (PTI)

Delhi: NDMC to discuss proposal to implement Ayushman Bharat scheme in its area on Wednesday

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will on Wednesday deliberate on a proposal to implement the Centre's flagship Ayushman Bharat scheme in its area, according to officials. The issue is likely to be discussed in the civic body's Council meeting.

"There is a proposal to implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme in the NDMC area. The council is likely to take a call on it tomorrow," a senior official said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had rolled out the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in February 2018. The insurance scheme aims to provide an annual health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. (PTI)

One month salary, pension of all employees released: MCD

Municipal Corporation of Delhi has released due one month salary and pension of all employees, officials said on Tuesday. Soon the remainder of outstanding salary and pension of employees would also be released, they claimed.

The reunified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) formally came into existence on Sunday, with IAS officers Ashwani Kumar and Gyanesh Bharti assuming charge as the new civic body's special officer and commissioner, respectively.

"Municipal Corporation of Delhi has released one month's salary of its employees. Additionally, the civic agency has also released one month's pension to its pensioners. The corporation has made a fund of Rs 432.84 crore available for this purpose. After release of salary and pension, both employees and pensioners felt relieved and happy," the MCD said in a statement. (PTI)

Delhi HC acquits five in 2014 molestation-murder case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday acquitted five men who were sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in a 2014 case of alleged molestation and murder of a woman.

A bench headed by Justice Siddharth Mridul extended the benefit of the doubt to the appellants and set aside the conviction and sentencing order passed by the trial court here in 2019, directing that they be released from custody forthwith.

The high court stated that there were several material contradictions in the prosecution's case and if two views are possible on the evidence adduced in a case, the view favouring the innocence of the accused should be adopted. (PTI)

Terror funding: Delhi court likely to pronounce punishment for Yasin Malik Wednesday

A Delhi court is likely to pronounce on Wednesday its judgment on the quantum of punishment for convicted Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, who had earlier pleaded guilty of all the charges including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in a terror funding case.

Special judge Praveen Singh had on May 19 convicted Malik and had directed NIA authorities to assess his financial situation to determine the amount of fine likely to be imposed.

Malik is facing a maximum punishment of death penalty, while the minimum sentence for the offences committed by him is life imprisonment. (PTI)

Maximum temperature settles at 32.5 deg C in Delhi, partly cloudy sky likely on Wednesday

The maximum temperature in Delhi on Tuesday settled at 32.5 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal, even as the weather office forecast light rain or drizzle late in the night.

The minimum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 18.9 degrees Celsius, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. The relative humidity stood at 77 per cent at 8.30 am and fell to 55 per cent at 5:30 pm.

Heavy rains and a thunderstorm drastically brought down the minimum temperature in the national capital on Monday. The city recorded a rainfall of 15 mm in the 24 hours starting 8:30 am on Monday. (PTI)

DU college principal booked under SC Act after former teacher alleges atrocities

The principal of Delhi University's Daulat Ram College has been booked for offences under the SC Act after an assistant professor (ad hoc) accused her of atrocities, police said on Tuesday. A few staff members of the college, located in the north campus, too have been booked, they said.

In August 2020, the assistant professor was sacked from the college, following which she had approached the court and later the police against her removal, but her plea was not entertained, they said.

Later, she again moved the court asking it to order a probe under Section 356 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Case, which states that any magistrate empowered under Section 190 may order such an investigation. (PTI)

Noida cops arrest 10 Delhi-based 'call centre' employees for duping job aspirants

Noida police have arrested 10 employees of a 'call centre' from Delhi for allegedly duping job aspirants, officials said on Tuesday. They estimated that the gang may have so far duped around 50 people and amassed over Rs 20 crore since they began operations two years ago.

The arrested people have been identified as Pawan Kumar, Jitesh Kumar, Ram Kishan, Deependra Kumar, Pradeep Kumar Singh, Arvind Kumar Yadav, Tejpal Singh, Rohit Kumar, Subhash Chandra and Ram Krishna Singh, the police said.

A complaint by a person alleging that he had been cheated on the false promise of a job led the police to unearth the racket, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Ranvijay Singh said. A resident of Sector 77, Noida, had approached the police alleging a fraud of Rs 20 lakh. (PTI)

Delhi BJP chief says water supply in city 'contaminated', writes to Shekhawat seeking quality check

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Tuesday urged Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to check the quality of water being supplied in the national capital, alleging that people consuming it are falling ill.

In a letter to Shekhawat, the BJP leader alleged people are compelled to drink "smelly and contaminated" water and demanded that cases be registered against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Water Minister Satyendar Jain and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) vice-chairman Saurabh Bhardwaj.

No immediate reaction was available from the Delhi government or the ruling Aam Aadmi Party on Gupta's allegations. (PTI)

Delhi man who went missing on Lonavala trip found dead in deep gorge: Police

A search team on Tuesday found the body of a 24-year-old man from Delhi who was missing since the last four days from a popular tourist viewpoint in Lonavala hill station of Pune district, police said.

The body was found several feet deep in a gorge in Pune, they said. The man, Farhan Serajjuddin, had been on a sightseeing trip of Lonavala, located around 65 km from Maharashtra's Pune city, and when he went to the Duke's Nose, a viewpoint popular with trekkers, he lost his way, they said.

He had initially managed to contact his friend though mobile phone to inform that he had lost his way back, but later his phone was not reachable, the police earlier said. (PTI)

Interstate gang of auto lifters busted in Delhi, six held

Six members of an interstate gang allegedly involved in auto lifting and selling parts of stolen vehicles to unsuspecting customers were arrested from different parts of the city, police said on Tuesday.

With their arrest, 67 cases of auto theft were worked out, they said, adding that 207 engines and seven chassis of stolen motorcycles were recovered from the auto thieves.

Tools used for tampering and erasing engine and chassis numbers were also recovered, police said. The accused were identified as Azeem (22), Javed (32), Furkaan (40), Hariom (34), Shahid Ahmad, (28) and Nadeem (30). (PTI)

Delhi govt to survey 30 markets from Wednesday to choose 5 for redevelopment

A Delhi government panel will begin from Wednesday a survey of 30 markets for feasibility of beautification and shortlist five of them to redevelop as announced in the Rozgar Budget for 2022-23, officials have said.

The survey will begin from Lajpat Nagar and Sarojini Nagar markets and will be completed in a week's time, Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) chairman Brijesh Goyal, who is a member of the panel, said.

The final five markets will be chosen on the basis of the report to be submitted next week after the completion of the survey, he said. (PTI)

2020 Delhi riots: In jail for two years on basis of hearsay statement of witness, says Khalid to HC

Former JNU student Umar Khalid, arrested in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the riots here in February 2020, Tuesday contended before the Delhi High Court that he has been in jail for the last two years based on a protected witness' hearsay statement which has no corroboration.

“The prosecution really needs to make up its mind as to what is the case against me,” Khalid's counsel submitted before a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar.

The bench was hearing Khalid's plea challenging a trial court's order which had on March 24 dismissed his bail application in the case. “I have to bear the brunt of two years of imprisonment because you have a statement,” the counsel said. (PTI)

Delhi HC dismisses with Rs 25k cost appeal by doctors concerning FMG Test

The Delhi High Court has dismissed an appeal by a doctors' association challenging the imposition of cost and certain adverse observations made by the court while dismissing their petition seeking to postpone the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) screening test due to COVID-19 and imposing a further cost of Rs 25,000.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla said that there was no merit in the Association of MD Physicians' appeal which was directed against the single judge's finding that the appellant indulged in “forum shopping,” and directed that the cost be deposited with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority.

“We find no merit in the present appeal. The same is dismissed with a further cost of Rs. 25,000/- to be deposited with the Delhi State Legal Services Authority,” the court said in its order dated May 23. (PTI)

National resource centre for oral health and tobacco cessation opened in Delhi

A national resource centre for oral health and tobacco cessation was on Tuesday opened by the Delhi government here with the objective of spreading awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco and drugs, provide better training to dentists and to conduct research on dental healthcare, officials said.

The city government claimed that it was "first" such facility in the country. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain inaugurated the National Resource Centre for Oral Health and Tobacco Cessation (NRC-OH-TC), the government said in a statement.

The centre has been "established with the objective of spreading awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco and drugs, to provide better training to the dentists of the country and to conduct research on dental health". (PTI)

No decision taken to carry out excavations at Qutub Minar: Culture Minister

After reports emerged on Sunday that the Ministry of Culture has ordered the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct excavations at the Qutub Minar in Delhi, officials in the ministry told The Indian Express that no such orders have been issued so far. Union Culture Minister G K Reddy also clarified saying, “No such decision has been taken.”

Culture Secretary Govind Mohan visited the monument on Saturday, after which it was reported that the ASI has been ordered to conduct excavations to ascertain whether the UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by Qutubuddin Aibak in the 12th Century or by the Gupta Empire much earlier. The Ministry insisted it was a regular site visit by its officials and no such decision has been taken so far. ASI officials were not available for comment.

A few days ago, former ASI regional director Dharamveer Sharma was quoted as saying that the Qutub Minar was actually a “sun tower” built by Chandragupta Vikramaditya of the Gupta Empire in the 5th Century.

Fuels prices slashed, auto unions demand relief for CNG too

A day after the Centre slashed excise duty on fuel prices, the rates of petrol and diesel in Delhi were reduced by Rs 8.69 per litre and Rs 7.05 per litre respectively. The new prices kicked in from 6 am on Sunday. While petrol and diesel dealers, vehicle owners and taxi associations welcomed the move, cab and autorickshaw unions were unhappy as there was no relief or subsidy on CNG.

Petrol prices in the city had crossed the Rs 100-mark (per litre) in the past few months. Till Saturday, petrol was being sold at Rs 105.45 per litre and diesel at Rs 96.71 per litre. After the reduction in prices, petrol now costs Rs 96.76, while diesel costs Rs 89.66 at Hindustan Petroleum pumps and Rs 89.62 per litre at Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum.
