Manish Sisodia walks out of Tihar jail after 17 months but won’t be returning as Delhi deputy CM. Here’s why

When he walks out of Tihar jail after being imprisoned for a year and a half, Aam Aadmi Party’s Manish Sisodia will just be an MLA for the foreseeable future, according to government sources.

Having resigned from the post of deputy chief minister and his berth on the Delhi Cabinet days after he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26, 2023, Sisodia cannot have any ministerial berth till the time he is sworn in again.

Sisodia, who was named as an accused in the first FIR filed by the CBI in the Delhi Excise Policy case in 2022, was first arrested by the CBI and then by the Enforcement Directorate two weeks later. Read more

Manish Sisodia walks out of Tihar jail after 17 months; Why bail for him is music to AAP’s ears

As Manish Sisodia walks out of Tihar Jail today after a year and a half in jail, it will be to a party that has suffered a series of setbacks and is in dire need of a boost.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court dealt a big blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government when it ruled that the Lieutenant Governor had the power to nominate aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi without the government’s binding aid and advice.

The Delhi High Court, too, landed a blow, when it refused to hold Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest illegal and denied him interim bail. He now has to go back to the trial court, where his plea for regular bail in the CBI’s excise policy case will be argued. The Supreme Court has already granted him interim bail in the ED’s PMLA case originating from the CBI’s case.

At a time like this, Sisodia being granted bail in both the CBI and ED cases against him is expected to re-energise the party that is fighting its toughest battle yet, with most of its senior leaders under the scanner of central agencies. On Friday afternoon, an hour after the court verdict, senior party leaders gathered at the AAP office at Rouse Avenue in the national Capital and called the court decision to grant Sisodia bail a “victory of truth”. Yamuna on ventilator; set up STPs in Delhi to depollute the river: Swati Maliwal

Rajya Sabha member from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Swati Maliwal on Friday made a strong case for setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Delhi to help depollute the Yamuna as she accused the Delhi government of only making false promises to clean the river.

Raising the issue of pollution in the river during Zero Hour in the Upper House, she said people of the National Capital are lucky that Yamuna passes through the city, but the tragedy is that due to "our failure" the river has turned into a drain.

Maliwal said the Yamuna is worshipped since long, but today 22 drains empty in the river and 238 million gallon of untreated sewage is being dumped into it daily.

The situation is such that one sees more of poisonous foam floating on the river than water, she said.

The AAP MP further said only a small part of the river passes through Delhi but 76 per cent of it gets polluted in the stretch.

She said everyday factories are illegally discharging heavy metals and toxic chemicals in the river and there is no action.

Maliwal said that the Delhi government in 2021 had promised that it would make the Yamuna so clean before 2025 that one can even take a dip into it. (PTI)

"It's a travesty because you know 16-18 months passed while a person is arrested, irrespective of who it is. Chief minister or deputy chief minister, whoever it is, no person should be incarcerated beyond the date of chargesheet being filed.

"Because, once the chargesheet is filed, there is nothing new to be done in the case. Because, whatever investigations have had to happen have happened. To incarcerate a person endlessly is certainly a breach of their freedom," Rama Rao told PTI videos here.
