Delhi News Highlights: Court extends 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana’s NIA custody for 12 days

The Fire Department on Monday said the fire at the Bandhwari landfill site in Gurgaonhad been brought under control but is still not out completely.

Speaking with The Indian Express, Fire Safety Officer Jai Narayan said, “The fire is still not out, but it is under control. Ten fire tenders are still stationed there. I was there through the night yesterday (Sunday)."

"We had to bring in fire tenders from Faridabad, Palwal and Manesar, apart from several stations in the city. The civic body staff is also extending help, and coordination with them has been smooth so far,” Narayan added.

He said that a forest fire in the Aravallis probably led to the blaze at the landfill site.

He added that at least one fire tender will continue to be stationed there for three more days to prevent small fires.

A Delhi court on Monday sentenced a murder accused to life imprisonment and ruled out it was a "rarest of the rare" case to award him death penalty.

Principal district and sessions judge Vinod Kumar was hearing the case against Naushad Alam, booked by Punjabi Bagh Police Station under Section 302 (murder) of IPC.

Additional public prosecutor Atul Kumar Shrivastava said the victim, Shakeel Ahmed, was murdered by the accused by inflicting multiple injuries on his head with a blunt object in the intervening night of August 5-6, 2019. --PTI

The Delhi Police has arrested a 20-year-old man for firing gunshots outside a bar restaurant in Preet Vihar area of east Delhi, an officer said on Monday.

Affak, a native of Etah district in Uttar Pradesh, was nabbed near Karkari Mor flyover, he said.

According to police, around 10.30 pm on April 26, Affak fired shots at the entrance of House Restaurant and Bar.

One Sachin filed a complaint in the matter and an police investigation was launched.

A team discovered an empty shell and a live cartridge from the scene of crime.

Affak was arrested on the basis of a CCTV footage, the officer said.--PTI

A court in Delhi has sentenced a man to seven years rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a woman in December 2022, saying the penalty should be commensurate with the gravity of the "loathsome act."

Additional Sessions Judge Susheel Bala Dagar was hearing the arguments on the quantum of sentence against the 41-year-old man, who had been convicted under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354 B (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe) of the Indian Penal Code.

Former Union minister Vijay Goel on Sunday led a protest at Jantar Mantar highlighting the rising incidents of stray dog bites, calling for stronger action from authorities.

The demonstration saw the participation of hundreds of people and representatives from more than 100 resident welfare associations and non-governmental organisations across Delhi, said a statement.

Several dog attack victims also attended the protest and shared their experiences, it stated.

Addressing the gathering, Goel claimed that India is home to over 120 million dogs, with Delhi alone accounting for more than 1.1 million.

He claimed that around 20,000 people are bitten by stray dogs across the country daily, including 2,000 in Delhi. --PTI

Two children were killed in a fire that broke in Delhi’s Rohini Sector 17, engulfing around 800-1,000 jhuggis (makeshift houses).

Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said a call was received at 11.55 am about plumes coming out of the jhuggi area.

20 fire tenders were rushed to spot.

At 2.05 PM, bodies of two children, aged between 3 and 4 years, were found, DFS officials said.
