How DU colleges are guiding candidates on registration, course selection

While colleges’ role in Delhi University admissions has been diminished under the new system adopted this year, they are trying to find ways to help students with registration and selection of their preferences.

The admission process this year is being conducted in a centralised way by the university based on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores. Whereas earlier colleges would set their own cut-offs for their various programmes based on their analysis of popularity of programmes and the class XII scores of aspirants, this year the university will allot seats based on preferences listed by candidates and their position in the CUET score-based merit list. PM Modi pays tributes to Gandhi, Shastri

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, and urged everyone to purchase khadi and handicraft products as a tribute to him.

CBI makes social media debut ahead of Interpol General Assembly

Social media shy CBI has made a maiden appearance on Twitter and Instagram ahead of the upcoming Interpol General Assembly in which 195 countries are likely to participate, officials said on Sunday.

The agency created its accounts on both platforms with user ID CBI_CIO for the three-day-long 90th General Assembly starting October 18, they said.

Unlike its peers, the Enforcement Directorate and the National Investigation Agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had kept social media at an arm's length, sticking to the age-old practice of issuing press releases.

The General Assembly will focus on cyber crime, financial crimes and Child Sexual Abuse Material peddled on the internet among other issues, officials said.

Having already organised a General Assembly in 1997, India was given an out-of-turn chance to organise the event through a vote on the eve of the 75th anniversary of its independence.

Home Minister Amit Shah had made a proposal in this regard to Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock, who called on the minister during his visit to India.

The General Assembly is Interpol's supreme governing body, comprising representatives from each of the 195 member countries which meet annually.

Each member country may be represented by one or several delegates who are typically ministers, chiefs of police, heads of their Interpol National Central Bureaus and senior ministry officials, they said.

India, which joined the organisation in 1949, is one of the oldest members of The International Criminal Police Organization, known as Interpol.

Headquartered in Lyon, France, Interpol was founded in 1923 as the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC). The name Interpol served as the agency's telegraphic address in 1946, and was chosen as its common name in 1956.

The CBI is designated as the National Central Bureau of India for Interpol.

The agency has actively participated in two recent operations based on Interpol inputs-- Operation Megha Chakra against online Child Sexual Abuse Material and Operation Garud against narcotics. PTI

HC quashes FIR, asks woman to provide sanitary napkins in schools for 2 months

The Delhi High Court has directed a woman to provide sanitary napkins to a girls' school for two months as condition to quash an extortion case lodged against her.

The high court also asked a lawyer, who was the complainant in the extortion case, to report to the office of Delhi High Court Legal Service Committee (DHCLSC) and undertake pro bono (done for public good free of cost) work to the best of his ability and capability for the next three months.

It quashed the FIR after noting that no purpose would be served in prosecuting the complainant as the parties have arrived at a settlement and wish to put a quietus to the dispute between them.

"However, I am of the view that considerable time of the police and judiciary has been wasted. The police machinery has been put in motion on account of the acts of commission and omission on behalf of the parties and useful time of the police which could have been utilised for important matters has been misdirected towards this case. Hence, the parties must do some social good," Justice Jasmeet Singh said.

The high court said, "In this view of the matter, the FIR is quashed subject to the petitioner (woman) providing sanitary napkins to a girls' school, which will be identified by the prosecutor, not having less than 100 girls from Class-VI to XII for a period of 2 months." The woman had sought quashing of an FIR lodged against her at Preet Vihar Police Station by the lawyer for alleged extortion and criminal intimidation.

It was alleged in the FIR that the woman had sought legal professional consultancy from the complainant and her senior colleague.

Despite rendering best professional services, the petitioner misbehaved and did not pay their professional fee after which the FIR was lodged.

It is stated that the petitioner has also registered an FIR against the respondent lawyer which was 8 months prior to the present FIR.

During pendency of the proceedings, a compromise has been reached between the parties and they decided to put a quietus to the FIRs and undertake to cooperate with each other in getting the FIRs quashed.

The court said needful shall be done within 4 weeks and listed the matter for compliance by the investigating officer in April, 2023. PTI

Gandhi Jayanti an occasion to rededicate ourselves to values of peace, communal harmony: Prez Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday greeted citizens on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti and said it is an occasion for all to rededicate themselves to the values of peace, equality and communal harmony.

"On the occasion of the 153rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, I pay homage to the Father of the Nation on behalf of all fellow citizens," she said in a message to the nation.

Gandhi Jayanti is an occasion for all of us to rededicate ourselves to the values of his inspiring life - peace, equality and communal harmony, the president said.

Observing it this year assumes a special significance as the nation has been celebrating the Amrit Mahotsav, marking 75 years of Independence, Murmu said.

This is the time, for all of us, to work towards the realisation of India of Gandhiji's dreams, she said.

A century ago, Gandhiji inspired millions with his call of 'Swadeshi' and his stress on self-reliance, Murmu said.

"The making of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which is under way, is thus inspired by the vision of the Mahatma and is intended as a true tribute to him. The India of his dreams is a clean India, a healthy India. The initiatives taken in this regard have been bearing fruits now," Murmu said.

As we enter the 'Amrit Kaal', the period before the centenary of Independence, it is heartening to note that the young generation too has been taking inspiration from Gandhiji's works, the president said.

When the world is going to face more and more complex challenges, his life continues to serve as a lighthouse, helping us negotiate the path amid turbulent waters, Murmu added.

Gandhiji showed to all humanity its true potential, and proved the power of compassion, she said.

"Let us again take the pledge to walk on his path, the path of truth and non-violence, to promote mutual goodwill and to work towards the progress of the nation and the world," President Murmu said. PTI

From today onwards, the Delhi government’s automatic subsidy on electricity bills is coming to an end. Delhi residents now have to “opt in” if they want to continue getting a subsidised bill. The Delhi government started the free electricity scheme in 2019. Under the scheme, consumers who use less than 200 units of power per month do not get charged any money at all in their bill. If you use more than 200 units, a bill is generated for all the units used, and not on consumption over 200 units. Those who use up to 400 units get a subsidy of 50% up to Rs 800.
