The ED had questioned Kejriwal in connection with its probe into the excise policy case. Earlier in the day, the Delhi HC had refused to grant Kejriwal protection from coercive action in the case.

How Kejriwal’s absence could be felt in Delhi’s governance

From helming Cabinet meetings to giving direction to the AAP’s vision of governance for the Capital, Arvind Kejriwal has been at the core of both the administration in Delhi as well as the party’s expansion across the country for the last decade.

During his nine years as CM, he pitched several important schemes of the AAP government — power and water subsidies, free travel for women in the city’s public buses, and the education and health models. He headed the Delhi Jal Board as its chairperson for a significant duration between 2015 and 2020, and gradually distanced himself from any official portfolio for most of the AAP’s second term in power.

Kejriwal, instead, had entrusted significant departments such as power, water and the Public Works Department to Satyendar Jain before the reins of more than a dozen government departments like education were handed over to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

While Jain was arrested in 2022, Sisodia was sent behind bars in the liquor policy case last year. Read Full Report

Kejriwal arrest: 95% of ED cases since BJP came to power in 2014 against Opposition leaders

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in the Delhi liquor policy case fits into a larger pattern of Opposition parties coming under the organisation’s net under the BJP-led NDA rule since 2014.

A report carried by The Indian Express in September 2022 — based on a study of court records, agency statements and reports of politicians booked, arrested, raided or questioned by the ED — pointed to how, since 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led BJP first came to power, there had been a four-fold jump in ED cases against politicians in comparison to the UPA regime earlier.

The investigation showed that 121 prominent politicians had come under ED probe between 2014 and 2022, of whom 115 were Opposition leaders who had been booked, raided, questioned or arrested — 95% of the cases.

This was in sharp contrast to the agency’s casebook under the UPA regime (2004 to 2014) – when 26 political leaders in all were probed by the agency. Of these, 14 were Opposition leader, or more than half (54%). Read Full Report

In case of no relief in Supreme Court for Kejriwal, streets the next recourse for AAP

A long fight that will be played out on the roads of Delhi, and across the country, is what the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has promised in the wake of the arrest of its convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Glimpses of what could follow could be seen outside his house Thursday evening as MLAs, workers and volunteers started to gather as soon as news broke of an ED team reaching the CM’s home.

AAP’s Delhi unit chief Gopal Rai said the arrest showed the BJP was scared, and asked people to gather at the AAP office at 10 am on Friday. “BJP is scared of losing the polls. It will come down from the 400 seats, that it is hoping to get, to 40 in the Lok Sabha polls… Narendra Modi has started the fight and we will finish it… everyone should be prepared to protest tomorrow,” Rai said, inviting anyone who is against “dictatorship” to participate in the demonstration.

AAP sources said plans to mobilise people were being chalked out late into the night. They expressed confidence that the people of Delhi “will be out on the roads” to protest the “illegal arrest” of their “beloved” CM. Read Full Report

What Kejriwal arrest means for Opposition in Delhi, heading into Lok Sabha polls

What happens after the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is as likely to have an impact on the results of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as it is on the contours of the capital’s administration and governance going forward, sources across the BJP, Congress as well as AAP said. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress – the chief protagonists of the INDIA bloc in Delhi – believe that Kejriwal’s arrest will act as a shot in the arm for its political prospects in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP, according to insiders, has its sights set on the city’s possible “transformation into a world class capital territory”.

“The AAP has been fighting against the BJP for the sake of the Constitution of this country so far and will continue to do so… we hope the Supreme Court will protect the democracy of the country,” AAP Minister Atishi said.

Throwing his weight behind his party’s ally, Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely, who led a Congress delegation to Kejriwal’s residence, said, “Timing of the elections shows the BJP is afraid of our alliance. Democracy is in danger. This happens in Pakistan, not in India.” Read Full Report

Kejriwal's arrest marks end of drama that has been going on for over a year: BJP

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said that Kejriwal’s arrest had brought satisfaction to the people of Delhi.

“The liquor scam started in Delhi from 2021, and revelations have been made one after the other since on how money was laundered with brokers and liquor contractors... Today, Kejriwal’s arrest marks the end of a drama that has been going on for over a year,” he said.

She also added that AAP is the only party which is standing tall against BJP despite cases, raids, summons and arrests. "They say in their press release that the scam is worth Rs 100 crore. I ask BJP, if we had done this, would we not have given Rs 50 crore to you in electoral bonds. If you look at the Electoral Bonds list, there are many who have managed to get rid of ED after giving funding through electoral bonds," Atishi said.

Till now, after a 2-year long investigation, ED has not recovered any money from AAP leaders: Atishi

Delhi Water Minister and AAP leader Atishi responded on Delhi HC refusal to grant CM Arvind Kejriwal protection from coercive action in excise policy case. Atishi said that Delhi HC has issued notice to ED on the matter of the interim relief and posted the matter for April 22.

"I want to ask the ED, which has become a political tool of the BJP government today, please tell us how much money you found in relation to the same case in which you are sending summons upon summons. How much money has been recovered? Till now, after a 2-year long investigation, ED has not recovered any money from AAP leaders. This is also the reason why AAP leaders have the gumption to fight the ED," Atishi said.

Coal scam: Ex-minister Dilip Ray seeks stay on conviction to contest upcoming LS, Odisha elections

Former Union minister Dilip Ray, who was sentenced to three-year jail term in a coal scam case pertaining to irregularities in the allocation of a Jharkhand block in 1999, Thursday urged the Delhi High Court to grant a stay on his conviction as he wishes to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha and Odisha assembly elections.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued notice to the CBI and asked it to file a status report on the application of 71-year-old Ray, a Minister of State (coal) in the erstwhile Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

The high court listed the matter for further hearing on April 5.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Ray, submitted that the politician wishes to contest the upcoming elections and so was seeking a stay on his conviction.

The application said by virtue of Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, Ray stands disqualified from contesting the forthcoming national or Odisha state assembly elections or getting nominated to the Rajya Sabha, which irreparably and irreversibly causes grave prejudice to him, especially considering his age. In the BJP bastion of Gautam Buddh Nagar, Samajwadi Party's Lok Sabha candidate Rahul Awana says he is raising issues related to farmers and homebuyers across Noida and Greater Noida to connect with the voters of the constituency.

Awana says these issues have remained unresolved for long under the BJP rule.

Delhi News Live Updates: 'Kavitha conspired with Kejriwal, high profile arrests likely: What CBI told court on excise policy case

On a day the Central Bureau of Investigation told a Delhi court that “some high-profile persons” may be arrested in the Delhi excise policy case, the Enforcement Directorate alleged — for the first time — that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was a conspirator in the case.

“ED investigation revealed that Ms K Kavitha along with others conspired with the top leaders of AAP including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia for getting favours in the Delhi excise policy formulation and implementation. In exchange of these favours, she was involved in paying Rs 100 crore to the leaders of AAP,” alleged the ED spokesperson on Monday. “By the acts of corruption and conspiracy in the formulation and implementation of Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, a continuous stream of illegal funds in the form of kickback from the wholesalers was generated for AAP.”

Ajmeera, who comes from an Adivasi Banjara (ST) background, hails from Telangana’s Warangal district. He studied at a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. Read more

Delhi’s polluted capital tag a national shame, flags L-G; AAP says rude and abusive language used

A day after a report said Delhi was number one among the world’s most polluted capitals, Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena shot off a strongly worded letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying the AAP government’s much-hyped “Delhi model” is shrouded in a haze of “smog”. AAP hit back saying, “The language is rude, curt and bordering on abusive”.

According to the World Air Quality Report for 2023, Delhi was the most polluted capital city in the world in 2023 and the third most polluted city in India after Begusarai and Guwahati in terms of PM 2.5 levels.

In his letter, the L-G wrote: “This dubious distinction is a matter of national shame and collective concern. With Delhi being the second most polluted Capital in the world in 2022 and the most polluted Capital city in the world in 2021, I am sure this report card of nine years of your government is not one which you would be proud of. The much talked about Delhi model is shrouded in a haze of smog.”
