Delhi News Highlights: Rs 500 crore investment fraud bust; Elvish Yadav, Bharti Singh among 5 summoned

Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta informed the Delhi High Court on Thursday that the Delhi Police commissioner’s office has withdrawn prohibitory orders on public assembly, leading to the release of Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and others from detention.

During a virtual appearance before a bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, Mehta submitted, “Two statements (to make) – order which was passed on September 30 (by the police commissioner’s office prohibiting the assembly of five or more persons) now stands withdrawn in view of changed circumstances in an order dated October 2. So far the persons who were allegedly detained, they are out, they went to Rajghat, they were there for two hours, they gave a memorandum to MHA, which was accepted.”

The bench was hearing pleas seeking a writ of habeas corpus to produce Wangchuk and other detainees before the court as well as the quashing of the prohibitory orders. Read Here

A doctor was shot dead in what appears to be a targeted attack at a small nursing home located in Kalindi Kunj in South East Delhi in the early hours of Thursday. According to the Delhi Police, they were alerted about the crime at around 1.45 am. When the police team arrived at the scene, they found Dr Javed Akhtar, a Unani practitioner, slumped over his desk with a gunshot wound to the left side of his head. Forensic teams from the District Crime Unit and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Rohini, were called to the scene, and collected evidence for analysis, said the police. A police officer said their preliminary investigations revealed that two boys, approximately 16-17 years old, came to the hospital at around 1 am. One of the boys had an injured toe, which had been dressed the previous night at the same hospital by staff member Mohammad Kamil, the officer added. Read

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday denied default bail to two co-accused in the Enforcement Directorate’s money-laundering investigation against Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendar Jain.

The co-accused Vaibhav Jain and Ankush Jain, who were arrested on June 30, 2022, are alleged to have intentionally aided Jain by misrepresenting his movable assets as their own, thereby concealing the true nature of the alleged proceeds of crime. They argued that the ED filed an incomplete prosecution complaint against them on July 22, 2022, while investigations were still pending.

The ED contended that the initiation of further investigations does not imply that the prosecution complaint was based on incomplete findings. The agency also said the pendency of further investigation does not trigger the right to default bail.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed an appeal by a postgraduate student challenging the non-availability of supernumerary seats in Delhi University through the sports quota, stating that such discretion falls within the university’s domain and that a student cannot claim such seats as a matter of right.

The student-petitioner, Vidushi Kasniya, a karate champion, claimed that while applying for the master’s course in psychology, she could not select the option of “admission on sports supernumerary quota,” despite such seats being mentioned in the bulletin of information for the Common Seat Allocation System.

Delhi University informed the court that it considered the sport of karate to provide a sports supernumerary quota for undergraduate courses and select postgraduate courses (MA in music, MPEd, BPEd, MFA, etc), but not for other courses. Read Here

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday rejected the preliminary objection raised by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) regarding the maintainability of the petition filed by three cadres of the United National Liberation Front (P) challenging their arrest and remand orders for waging war against the state in the backdrop of Manipur’s ethnic violence.

The high court also held that in matters concerning personal liberty, it is “never just or proper to reject a plea based on a pedantic, hyper-technical” approach.

Based on a July 19, 2023, FIR, NIA arrested the self-styled army chief of the organisation Thokchom Shyamjai Singh, its intelligence officer Laimayum Anand Sharma, and a driver Salam Ibomcha Meitei on March 13. The three are facing charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy and waging war against the state, as well as for offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Read

AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal is set to vacate his Civil Lines residence this week and will be relocating with his family to a residential unit in the New Delhi area, according to sources within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The new house has already been finalized.

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is set to meet activist Sonam Wangchuk and other detained protesters from Ladakh at Bawana police station, criticizing their detention as a "dictatorship." Atishi expressed that it’s unjust for Ladakhis to be stopped from peacefully protesting and attempting to visit Gandhi Samadhi on October 2.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also condemned the police action, arguing that everyone has the right to come to Delhi. Sisodia pointed out the government's focus on controlling peaceful protestors rather than addressing real issues like crime.

Ladakh MP Haji Hanifa Jan voiced concern over the government's handling of Ladakhi issues and called for a platform to submit their demands to Prime Minister Modi. Wangchuk and his supporters were marching from Leh to New Delhi to demand that Ladakh be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which would provide local law-making powers to protect their land and culture. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, along with cabinet ministers, inspected damaged roads across various parts of the city on Tuesday to ensure a pothole-free Delhi by the end of October.

Atishi, accompanied by local MLA Praveen Kumar, examined roads in the Sarai Kale Khan area. She criticized the BJP for allegedly trying to obstruct the government's work by targeting former CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj, Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain also inspected roads in different areas and directed officials to prioritize repairs.

Atishi had earlier held a meeting, stating that the inspection process would lead to road repairs before Diwali. (PTI)
