Delhi police are on the lookout for a couple who allegedly abandoned a newborn girl at the foot over-bridge of Govindpuri Metro station Monday night. Source said CCTV footage showed a middle-aged couple carrying the girl while entering the metro station.
Security staff at the Metro station spotted the child lying on the side of a footover bridge at about 10.45 pm Monday. They informed the police control room about the abandoned baby.
They also rushed the girl to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). “The girl was brought here at 11.45 pm. Medical examination showed she is healthy and of normal body weight. She appeared dehydrated, weak and was crying. There were no external injuries on her body,” said a senior doctor from AIIMS.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Jitendra Mani told The Indian Express that the girl was handed over to an NGO Palna in Civil Lines area after being produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). “The girl is doing fine. We have launched a search for her parents and also the couple seen in the footage from the metro station.”
Dr Sandhya Bhalla, director of the NGO said, “The baby is healthy and absolutely fine. The CWC has placed her under our care till alternate arrangements are made.”
A case under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years, by parent or person taking care of it) of the IPC has been registered at Kalkaji Metro police station. At least four teams of Delhi police have been tasked with searching for the girl’s family.
