A day after his arrest, Ankush Khanna, who lied about the identity of the driver in Anjali Singh's hit-and-run case was granted bail by a Delhi Court on Saturday. Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order, Zone II) Sagarpreet Hooda said that Ankush, accused Amit Khanna’s brother, was produced before the Rohini court and police demanded his police custody. “However, the punishment under IPC section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 212 (harbouring offender) is only three years. Hence, it is a bailable offence. The court granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 20,000,” he said.
Shankar Mishra, who was accused of urinating on a female passenger on an Air India flight last November, was sent to a 14-day judicial custody, a Delhi Patiala House Court said on Saturday. Metropolitan Magistrate Anamika at Patiala House Court rejected a three-day police custody application moved by the police, saying police custody was not a punishment.

A 26-year-old woman, who is seven months pregnant, was allegedly set on fire by her husband outside their home in Outer Delhi’s Bawana.
Initially, the woman allegedly told the investigating officer that it was an accident due to a bonfire in the house and no case was registered. Later, she revealed to police and SDM that her husband was allegedly harassing her and set her on fire during a fight.
The woman suffered 20-30% burn injuries on both hands, legs, face and chest and is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Read more
Water supply will be affected in many parts of the city on January 12 and 13, on account of pipeline work at the Haiderpur water treatment plant.
Water supply will not be available from 10 am on January 12 to 10 pm on January 13, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said in a communication on Monday. The DJB is working on interconnections of new pipelines carrying raw water within the Haiderpur water treatment plant, the communication added.
Water supply will be affected in parts of North, Northwest, West and Southwest Delhi. The DJB has advised residents to store water in view of the disruption later this week. Read more

The Delhi Police told a court Monday that the accused persons in the Kanjhawala hit-and-run case knew that 20-year-old Anjali Singh was stuck under the wheels of their car, on the basis of new CCTV footage.
The revelation was made before Metropolitan Magistrate Sanya Dalal, who sent six of the accused to 14-day judicial custody.
Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava, who appeared on behalf of police, told the court that police had access to six new CCTV footage and in one footage, two persons were seen getting down from the car and they saw that “something is there and despite knowing that someone was stuck, they continued to drive”. Days after the Public Works Department (PWD) issued eviction notice to the about 150 families living in a slum cluster near Dhaula Kuan amid the cold wave, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia Monday directed them to withdraw the demolition order.
The Indian Express had first reported about eviction notice on Saturday.
“PWD officials have been ordered to immediately withdraw the order of demolition of slums located near Dhaula Kuan. Demolition of the houses of the poor without ensuring other residence in the cold is not acceptable under any circumstances,” Sisodia said in a tweet.

The AAP on Monday held a protest outside the BJP headquarters here over the aldermen nominated by the Lt Governor to the MCD House being administered oath before the elected representatives and accused the saffron party of flouting rules.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar District Consumer Court has issued a conditional order sentencing the chief executive officer of the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) to one month in jail and a Rs 2,000 fine if an order of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission is not implemented in 15 days.
In its 2014 order, the commission had granted a plot to Delhi resident and petitioner Mahesh Mitra. Meanwhile, GNIDA said they were seeking legal opinions regarding the order. Read more
Several shanties were gutted after a fire broke out near Ghasola village in sector 49 in Gurgaon today at around 12 pm.
Several fire tenders were rushed and the fire was controlled. No casualties were reported, according to the fire department officials.
Delhi HC has asked Ashneer Grover, the former MD of BharatPe to “maintain decorum” on social media with regard to statements about BharatPe, following his ouster from the fintech company.
A single judge bench of Justice Navin Chawla while issuing notice on an application moved by Grover and his wife Madhuri seeking access to certain emails, observed that social media has brought us down to this level. “Ask him to maintain decorum,” Justice Chawla told Grover’s counsel.
During the course of the hearing, BharatPe’s counsel senior advocate Rajiv Nayar drew the court’s attention to certain tweets made by Grover against the company and its officers which Nayar said, “it can't be repeated in front of the court”.
Grover’s counsel on the other hand told the court that the company had initiated legal proceedings against him. Nayar for Bharatpe further told the court that Grover had recently released a book where he made statements equating the legal profession to prostitution.
The HC subsequently granted time to other defendants -- the relatives of Grover, to file their response to the interim application moved by Bharatpe. The matter is now listed for March 13. Bharatpe has sought an interim order restraining Ashneer Grover, his wife, and family members from making defamatory statements against the company. The company has further filed a lawsuit seeking damages of over Rs 88 crore from Grover, his wife, and other family members under several heads.
More than 260 trains were cancelled on Monday due to bad weather conditions in the national capital, the railway department said. The services took a hit as visibility continued to remain low in Delhi due to dense fog on Monday morning.
According to the India Meteorological Department’s latest update, visibility in Delhi’s Safdarjung area was at 25m and 50m at Palam this morning. “A total of 267 trains, including 82 express trains, 140 passenger trains and 40 sub-urban trains, were cancelled,” a railways official said.
Earlier on Sunday, around 335 trains were delayed, 88 cancelled, 31 diverted and 33 short-terminated due to foggy weather. Read more.
The family of Anjali Singh who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Sultanpuri last week alleged that someone broke into their home in Rohini’s Karn Vihar and stole their LED TV set, among other things. They expressed apprehension that the thief may have tried to “steal something related to the case” and added that they no longer trust the police.
The family members said they were at the hospital on Monday morning when the theft allegedly took place. The Delhi Police had increased security around the house after the family and locals started protests seeking a proper investigation into the 20-year-old’s death. The house and the entire locality was barricaded and manned by police personnel. The police, however, removed the security from the area earlier on Monday morning. Read more.
The Delhi High Court on Monday asked a petitioner raising issues concerning the sinking of Joshimath in Uttarakhand to find out about the pendency of a similar issue before the Supreme Court.
Lawyer Rohit Dandriyal mentioned his plea before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad for listing, which asked him to approach it again after enquiring about any such pendency.
“If there is a petition in the apex court on the same problem, shall the high and the Supreme Court both look into it? Inquire about it and then you can mention. Find out first,” the bench said. Read more.
Haryana Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested another accused in the multi-crore burglary case in Gurgaon the 20th arrest in the case so far, said investigators. Police sources said the accused, identified as Vikrant, was arrested last week and taken on remand for questioning.
An STF officer said, “He has been arrested for his alleged involvement in shifting the stolen money. Further questioning is on.”
So far, 20 accused have been arrested in the case and total recovery stands at Rs 9.9 crore, including gold, foreign currency and six vehicles, said officials. Read more.

A theft has been reported from the house of the 20-year-old woman Anjali in Rohini early Monday morning.
The family said they were in the hospital when they were informed about the theft. "Our house has been ransacked and out TV set is missing," the family said. Senior police officers were on their way to the spot to conduct an investigation.
A public interest litigation plea filed before the Delhi High Court seeking the constitution of a high power joint committee under the chairmanship of a retired high court judge to immediately inspect the affected areas in Joshimath, Uttarakhand was mentioned before bench led by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma.
The bench which also comprises of Justice Subramonium Prasad observed that a plea has been filed before the Supreme Court by Swami Avimukteshwaranand, and if the HC can entertain the plea in such a case.
The HC has asked the counsel for the petitioner to check and mention the matter again.

With dense fog persisting over Delhi-NCR early on Monday, the minimum temperature was around 3.8 degrees Celsius in the national Capital.

Amid cold wave conditions, this is the fifth consecutive day that the minimum temperature is at 4 degrees or lower at the Safdarjung weather station in Delhi, the city’s base observatory. The minimum temperature at Lodhi Road was around 3.6 degrees Celsius, while Palam recorded a higher minimum of 5.8 degrees.
The IGI Airport at Palam has been blanketed in dense fog since around 1 am, according to the India Meteorological Department. At 8.30 am, visibility at Palam was around 50 metres, while visibility at Safdarjung and the Ridge was lower at around 25 metres. At 9 am, the Delhi Airport issued an advisory alerting passengers of dense fog that might affect flight operations, and asking flyers to contact airlines for flight information.
A 43-year-old woman died after shooting herself in Northwest Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar after a quarrel with her husband Saturday. The police said they received a PCR call regarding a woman shooting herself in the chest with a revolver at her house.
A police staff rushed to the spot and the injured woman was taken to a hospital where she was declared ‘brought dead’. The deceased had one bullet injury on her chest, the police added. Read more.
The Delhi High Court recently acquitted a man, convicted for preparing to commit dacoity and jailed for 15 years, after it was found that he was never provided with legal aid during the trial period, which was ignored by the trial court.
A single-judge bench of Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma in its January 5 decision held that the right to a fair trial is a fundamental right. “This noble goal will fail in case a poor man charged with an offence is unable to defend himself without a lawyer to assist him. The more serious offence, the likely consequences are greater,” the court said. Read more.
A day after a 50-year-old woman was shot at, allegedly by a 16-year-old girl in Northeast Delhi, police said they will be questioning the woman and her relatives for allegedly “threatening” the minor, who was allegedly raped by the woman’s son two years ago.
The man was sent to jail following the incident.
On Saturday, around 5.30 pm, the woman was at her shop when the minor came and allegedly shot at her. She was rushed to a hospital by neighbours. The minor was seen fleeing the spot. Read more.

A 29-year-old Chinese woman allegedly tried to kill herself with a razor in a washroom of IGI Airport Terminal-3 here, police said on Sunday. The woman had landed at T-3 late Saturday night from Bahrain, and was due to take a flight to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
The incident took place around 4 am on Saturday, when the woman during her stopover went to the washroom and cut herself in throat and hand, police said. The authorities, when they were informed, rescued her and took her to a city hospital. Her condition is said to be stable, they said. The woman said she wanted to kill herself because she lost her job recently and her boyfriend too broke up with her, police said. (PTI)

The Delhi Police on Sunday issued a traffic advisory informing commuters about alternate routes they may have to take due to the 811th Urs-e-Mubarak of Sufi Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer Sharif. The three-day-long event began on Sunday, affecting traffic in central and southern parts.
Ankit Kumar, a commuter, said, "Traffic was slow near Hyatt Regency towards AIIMS. However, I took an alternate route to reach my destination." Another commuter, Vishesh Singh, said he was faced with a heavy traffic on the Outer Ring Road near Bhairon Marg, because of the closing of Pragati Maidan tunnel. "The tunnel is shut on every Sunday due to which traffic crawls on the Outer Ring Road even on the weekend." Traffic will be affected on Monday and Tuesday as well with the opening of most offices.
Police said the traffic on these two days will be affected on several stretches such as Jama Masjid Chowk, Matia Mahal-Chitli Qabar, Tiraha Bairam Khan, Delhi Gate, ITO, Pragati Maidan, Matka Shah Baba, Purana Quila, Sunder Nagar, Oberoi Hotel, and Dargah Hazarat Nizamuddin. (PTI)
Winter vacation in Delhi’s private schools have been extended till January 15 in the wake of a cold wave in the national capital, a circular from the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education said.
Private schools were slated to reopen after winter break on January 9.
“In continuation to the DOE’s (Directorate of Education) earlier circular, all private schools of Delhi are advised to remain close till January 15, 2023, in the wake of cold wave prevailing in Delhi,” the circular read. (Read more)
Two foreigners were deplaned from a Mumbai-bound Go First flight for allegedly violating safety rules, an official of the airline said Saturday.
“Two foreigners were offloaded from G8-372 Goa- Mumbai flight on January 6, after they violated the flight safety rules. Both passengers passed lewd comments to the crew members and disrupted fellow passengers too,” news agency ANI quoted a Go First spokesperson as saying.
The alleged incident occurred on January 6 when both the flyers passed “lewd comments” aimed at the crew members. (Read more)

A fire broke out on Sunday at an electronics factory in southeast Delhi's Okhla area, fire department said. According to it, the department was informed about the fire at 11.21 am, following which 21 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The conflagration was brought under control by 3 pm and the cooling process was underway. According to fire officials, the fire had broken out on the third and fourth floor of the factory. (PTI)
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Police, who was stabbed multiple times while trying to arrest a man accused of snatching a mobile phone earlier this week, succumbed to his injuries Sunday, said officials.
ASI Shambhu Dayal was taking the thief to the police station when he was stabbed in West Delhi’s Mayapuri area on January 4. He was admitted to BLK Hospital but died during treatment.
On Wednesday, around 4 pm, a woman named Vandana approached Dayal and asked for his help after her phone was allegedly snatched by a man who she said had also threatened her with a knife. Dayal took the complainant to the spot to identify the accused. (Read more)
A minor girl shot at a 50-year-old woman in northeast Delhi Saturday, said the police. The girl had filed a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act against the woman’s son two years ago, the police added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Sanjay Sain said at around 5.30 pm, the police received a PCR call regarding the incident. The woman was later shifted to a hospital by locals.
On further enquiry, it surfaced that she ran a grocery shop in the area. “A girl, aged around 16, came to the shop and allegedly shot her with a pistol. Primary inquiry revealed that the girl had got a case registered under Pocso Act against the son of the victim in 2021,” the DCP said. (Read more)

At least 100 people hailing from African nations allegedly surrounded a team of police personnel and attacked them in South Delhi’s Neb Sarai area. Officers said the team was trying to apprehend three Nigerians whose visas had allegedly expired but the men attacked them, and two of the persons who had been detained managed to escape.

Weeks after 117 phones were found inside cells in Central Jail, Sanjay Beniwal, Director General (Prisons) said 19 deputy superintendents and 38 assistant superintendents have been transferred from the prison department.

A flight sales executive was allegedly robbed by an autorickshaw driver and two of his associates in Palam Vihar area in Gurgaon, said police.
According to the police, the incident took place on January 1 around 11.30 pm, when the victim, who works in Gurgaon, was returning to his house in Delhi on his motorcycle.
“My motorcycle broke down near Krishan chowk. I parked it on the side of the road and was waiting for a commute when an autorickshaw, in which two men were seated, stopped. The auto driver offered to drop me to Kapashera. On the way, the driver stopped at a gas station for diesel. As the search for a possible leopard in Greater Noida West’s Ajnara Le Garden Society entered its fifth day, the feline has proved elusive. It was first sighted on December 27, though a search at the time did not yield anything. After a second sighting on Tuesday, with a video surfacing that appeared to show a leopard-like animal in the under-construction portions of the society, forest department personnel from Gautam Buddh Nagar and the neighbouring districts have been trying to find it.
The forest department has so far resorted to a variety of means to find if the leopard is lurking in the society. A number of thermal cameras have been deployed to detect the animal. Trap cages with goats as bait were also deployed, while stray dogs have been removed from the society as they were getting trapped in the cages, interfering with the search. A hydraulic crane was also requisitioned from the fire department to search the upper floors of buildings under construction. Read more.
A 35-year-old man died after a staircase inside a shop collapsed due to a blast caused by a “water pipe”, in North Delhi’s Sadar Bazar, officers said.
The deceased has been identified as Gulab Singh. He worked as a labourer at the shop that sold undergarments.
DCP(North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that around 6.20 pm on Saturday, a staircase inside a shop collapsed. “Due to the collapse, articles from the shop got scattered outside. Prima facie, it seems to be a blast caused from the water pipe. No soot, fire, pellets or smell of any chemical was observed,” the DCP said. Read more.
