On November 11, the Delhi government imposed Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR in response to the worsening air quality. It also announced the closure of schools up to Class 5 and directed all government, private, and unaided schools to operate in hybrid mode.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi-NCR continued to record ‘severe’ air quality levels. As of 7 am, the ten most polluted areas were Wazirpur (458), Bawana (451), Chandni Chowk (449), Jahangirpuri (446), Mundka (444), Rohini (442), Nehru Nagar (440), Ashok Vihar (439), Burari Crossing (439), and Anand Vihar (438).

In a statement earlier in the day, the CAQM said, “The AQI of Delhi which was recorded as 362 on November 10, exhibited a sharp increasing trend and has been recorded 425 at 9 am on November 11 owing to calm winds, stable atmosphere and unfavourable meteorological conditions.”

Here are the AQI levels recorded at 10 of the 39 monitoring stations across Delhi:

GRAP is a set of emergency measures that kick in to prevent further deterioration of air quality once it reaches a certain threshold. Stage 1 of GRAP is activated when the AQI is in the ‘poor’ category (201 to 300). The second, third and fourth stages are activated three days ahead of the AQI reaching the ‘very poor’ category (301 to 400), ‘severe’ category (401 to 450) and ‘severe +’ category (above 450) respectively.

Delhi CM’s response on rising AQI

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said, “Yesterday, I received news that the readings (air quality) weren’t available for five or six hours. That wasn’t Delhi’s fault at all. It was an all-India issue. The app wasn’t working at that time. Anyone could have gone online and seen that Delhi’s records were correct. They were fully visible and workable throughout the area.”

She also blamed the regions surrounding Delhi and said they are having a huge impact on pollution. Gupta said vehicles and smoke coming in from other states has contributed to Delhi’s pollution.
