In the colony in East Delhi where a five-year-old was brutalised, residents were reluctant to speak when asked about the house where the child was found.

“Humein nahin maloom hai” (We don’t know) is what most have to say.

Amid a street cluttered with kiosks and kaccha houses,is a lane leading to a nondescript building in the corner.

A child, about four years old, comes running out pointing to a room under the stairs. “Light chali gayi thi uss din. Yahin mili thi woh” (There was no electricity that day. This is where she was found). His mother pulls him back inside the house and shuts the door.

The room under the stairs is located at the end of the ground floor of the building. A bulb flickers in the corner. Neighbours refuse to go near the 5×5 feet room with a blue door, where for two days the child was tortured, raped and strangled till she fell unconscious. A neighbour who heard her wails, two days after she went missing, informed the girl’s parents and police thereafter.

Police said the man responsible for the brutal act is a 24-year-old named Manoj who is on the run. He rented the room just 10 days ago.

The Delhi Police has dispatched two teams to Bihar after his cellphone revealed his location.

Manoj, police said,is married and belongs to Auria village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.

A neighbour said,“Manoj moved in about 10 days ago. He did nothing all day. He told the owner that he was a painter and worked at the local market. I have seen him only once. He remained in the room most of the time and came out only in the evening. We last saw him on the evening of April 15.”

Neighbours said Manoj had fought with his father who asked him to get out of his house in Raghubar Nagar. His father, who has been detained by the police along with Manoj’s relatives,is a fruit juice vendor. He has a cart in Seelampur.

“I overheard his father telling police that his son was no good and that after marriage,he would misbehave and abuse everyone in the locality,” a neighbour said.

Police said his father had registered a case of trespassing against him in 2010. He was arrested and later released on bail.
