Delhi MCD mayoral elections to be held on November 14, after 7-month delay
Even if the elections are held successfully, the new Mayor and deputy mayor will only have a five-month tenure.
The mayoral posts have been reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category this year. After nearly a seven-month delay, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will hold the mayoral elections on November 14, the civic body stated Monday.
“The adjourned April (2024) meeting of the corporation for the election of Mayor and Dy. Mayor will be held on November 14, 2024 at 2:00 pm,” read a notice released by Municipal Secretary Shiva Prasad. Even if the elections are held successfully, the new Mayor and deputy mayor will only have a five-month tenure as the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act mandates mayoral elections to be held annually in April.
Leader of Opposition in the MCD, BJP’s Raja Iqbal Singh, credited his party following the date announcement. “The BJP’s struggle has borne fruit. Under BJP’s pressure, AAP has allowed the mayoral election on November 14. However, the Dalit community will remember the injustice committed by AAP. For seven months, AAP prevented the Dalit mayor from assuming office,” he said.
