Delhi man kills sick wife for not cooking food, and being ‘lazy’

Police in Delhi have arrested a man in the city’s outer Bhalswa Dairy area for allegedly killing his ailing wife after she could not cook his food nor do household chores. Bajrangi Gupta, 29, in a fit of rage assaulted his wife Preeti with a wooden stick leading to her death, officials said.

Preeti, 22, was anaemic and weak after recently delivering a child and hence was not able to cook regularly, police said, adding that her husband had accused her of being “lazy” and “uninterested” in domestic work.

Police said they have recovered the wooden stick used by Bajrangi, and that during interrogation he confessed to his crime saying he was angry with his wife and killed her.

On Sunday night, Bajrangi came back from work and picked up a heated argument with his wife when he saw no food on the table. “The situation got tense and he took a wooden stick and assaulted the woman. The severely injured woman collapsed, while the man fled the house,” said an officer. Preeti was rushed to the hospital by her relatives, he said.

Ravi Kumar Singh, DCP (Outernorth), said that Preeti was declared brought dead by the authorities of the Burari Hospital. “An inquiry was conducted. The SDM was intimated. He recorded the statement of Ahila Devi, Preeti’s mother,” Singh said.

The woman’s family alleged that Bajrangi Gupta who married Preeti three years ago would beat her up regularly. The woman delivered their first child three months ago.

“The autopsy report said that the woman was anaemic and physically weak. She suffered internal injuries, bled, and died. Her husband was angry at her because she did not cook food for him daily. We sent teams and asked informers to help us. The accused was traced and arrested,” the DCP said.
