In a span of one month after he came out of jail, a 22-year-old man allegedly stole six cars from west Delhi, all of one brand, for only one purpose: he liked the air-conditioning system of the car. This is what the police found after arresting and questioning Amrit Singh on Wednesday, said a source privy to the case. “Honda City cars are his peculiar fascination and all six he stole belonged to this brand,” the source added.
What has surprised police officials is that Singh apparently roamed around the city in the cars he stole, even gave joyrides to children of his locality, and abandoned the vehicles once they ran out of fuel, said the source.
Police officials warned that Singh’s cavalier ways did not detract from his crime. He is suspected of involvement in at least 16 car theft cases, said a police officer. “He acts like a vagabond and claims his sole motive is to enjoy the ride. Incidentally, he did not sell the six cars he stole after coming out of jail on August 8, having spent eight months behind bars,” the officer added. “He kept a master key with which unlocked any vehicle in seconds. We recovered all six cars abandoned in an around Gandhi Nagar area,” said the officer. Investigation revealed Singh tried to sell one of the cars in Meerut, but the deal fell through, said sources
Caught after stealing two-wheeler
Police caught the “master car thief” after a CCTV camera in east Delhi captured him stealing a two-wheeler after unlocking it in seconds. “We were studying motor vehicle thefts and CCTV footage was collected for identifying criminals. We were able to arrest Singh,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Rishi Pal. Police recovered the stolen two-wheeler, he added.
