Delhi Chief Minister Atishi recently approved a new tax rebate incentive scheme under which owners will get discounts on purchasing new vehicles after getting their old vehicles scrapped from government-authorised scrappers.
According to officials, the file has been forwarded to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena for final approval. Once he gives his nod, the scheme will be notified.
The scheme provides a concession in the motor vehicle tax on the registration of new transport and non-transport vehicles against the submission of a certificate of deposit (COD) in favour of old vehicles handed over for scrapping at a registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF).
Under this scheme, the concession will be 20 per cent on registration of new non-transport petrol/CNG/LPG-propelled vehicles and 15 per cent for such diesel-propelled vehicles. The concession for transport vehicles will be 15 per cent for petrol/CNG/LPG-propelled vehicles and 10 per cent for diesel-propelled vehicles. However, officials said tax concessions should not exceed 50 per cent of the scrap value.
Officials said the COD will be a necessary and sufficient document valid for three years from the date of its issuance and will also be electronically tradable. Further, no concession on COD will be issued against government-owned or impounded vehicles.
The transport department impounded around 14,000 vehicles during the drive against overaged vehicles. Once notified, owners with COD may avail of the benefits under this scheme when purchasing a new vehicle.
